After its record-breakingopening weekend, 20th Century Fox’sDeadpoolhas become the talk of the town, defying all odds and expectations with a whopping $135 million debut, the best ever for an R-rated movie. Even if you aren’t a fan of the comics, you will have likely noticed this fourth-wall breaking adventure making references to a number of movies, comic books and other pop culture happenings. Before you head to the theater to watchDeadpoolagain,Mr. Sunday Movieshas put together a new eight-minute video that breaks down over 100 Easter Eggs that can be found in the movie. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, there will be SPOILERS below, so read on at your own risk.
Some of these references are obvious, withRyan Reynolds' nods to his first appearance as theMerc With the Mouthin 2009’sX-Men Origins: Wolverine, and his critically-panned turn asGreen Lanternin 2011. He also pokes fun at 20th Century Fox’sX-Menuniverse that he’s firmly entrenched in. During a scene where Colossus (Stefan Kapicic) tries to dragDeadpoolback to the X-Mansion to see Professor X, the Merc responds by asking which Professor he’s going to see,James McAvoyorPatrick Stewart. We also see the X-Mansion a number of times, the stealth ship Blackbird and there’s even a crude reference to Beast. But those are just the tip of the iceberg.
The opening sequence is essentially a different version of the test footage that leaked and lead the way for 20th Century Fox to give the movie a green light, after the fans' exceedingly positive reactions to it. Early on in the film there are references to the creators of the comic book series,Rob Liefeld, who appears in a bar scene and is actually mentioned by name by Wade Wilson, andFabian Nicenza, whose name appears on two highway exit signs during the freeway chase/action sequence, along with a nod to directorTim Miller. There are also a few surprising nods to another iconic superhero,Spider-Man.
Spider-Manis never mentioned by name, but Wade does say one of the comic’s iconic lines, “Go get ‘em, tiger,” twice, along with the line “with great power comes great irresponsibility,” a different twist on the words of wisdom Spidey lives by. During the freeway sequence, there is also a sign for Parker Boulevard, a nod toPeter Parker, and, after Wade is deformed by Ajax, he mentions that he looks like he was bitten by a radioactive sharpei, a reference to Parker being bitten by a radioactive spider.
Deadpoolwill most likely continue to succeed at thebox officein the coming weeks and months ahead, and it’s possible that fans may discover even more Easter Eggs throughout its theatrical run. 20th Century Fox is already working onDeadpool 2, which we can only hope will have as many Easter Eggs and references as its predecessor.
