Similar to the way Hollywood likes to do a lot of remakes and reboots right now on the big screen, TV networks are going back to the past and reviving once hit shows for new seasons. NBC has their sights set on doing some more of this in the future and they are eyeing some shows that ended in the not-so-distant past. According to NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt, the network wants revivals of bothThe Officeand30 Rock.
The report comes courtesy ofDeadlinewho spoke with Bob Greenblatt about some possible revivals in the future. WithThe Office, which ended in 2013 along with30 Rock, the network has had conversations with co-creator Greg Daniels about bringing back themockumentary series. According to Greenblatt, Daniels is interested in it, but it doesn’t sound like it is going to happen right away. Here’s what he had to say about it.
“We often talk aboutThe Office, I’ve talked to Greg four times over the past few years. It’s always, ‘maybe some day but not now.’ There is certainly an open invitation but we don’t have anything happening right now. If he wants to do it, I’d like to do it.”
For many fans,The Officehad an incrediblysatisfying series finale. Considering that everyone went their own way at the end of the show, it would be hard to bring them all back to Dunder Mifflin and have it make sense. However, Deadline’s report notes that they would consider doing it with a new cast. Essentially, just doing another run ofThe Officewith a totally different company and a new group of people.
With30 Rock, things sound a little less certain, even if NBC wants more. Bob Greenblatt says that “I’d say to Tina ‘Hey, you think some more 30 Rock makes any sense?’ She’d say, I don’t know maybe.'“Tina Feycreated30 Rockand it was truly her baby the whole way, so it wouldn’t really work unless she was on board. However, NBC is interested in doing some of their other classic shows, likeThe West Wingand Possibly evenER, with Greenblatt saying he talks to Aaron Sorkin about it.
“I keep saying to him, ‘Do you want to do The West Wing again, wouldn’t it be great to do it?’ He says, ‘You know I love that show and some day I’d love to revisit it, but it’s not going to happen right now.’ I’ve said it to John Wells on ER, but there is nothing concrete except Miami Vice which is something that we are reviving.”
NBC’sMiami Vicereboot is the only thing actually happening as we speak, but they also do have the upcomingWill and Gracerevival, which has just been given a season 2 order. One of these other shows could get going quickly if the right pieces moved into place. In some cases, it would just take a phone call. Like if Tina Fey did decided she wanted to do more30 Rock, for example.
“We’re not thinking anything beyond Miami Vice…if Tina called and said ‘I’d do 30 Rock,’ I’d do it in a heartbeat, even for a limited run. The same about The Office.”
The Officeand30 Rockboth still have very rabid fan bases and are constantly being discovered by new viewers via streaming services So even though the shows haven’t been off the air that long, arevival would seem to make sense. While many fans would like to see these shows return, just don’t get your hopes up too much as it sounds like these are just on NBC’s wishlist right now.
