In just a few months, principal photography will begin onAlien: Covenant, with casting already starting to heat up. We reported earlier this month thatFantastic Beasts and Where to Find ThemstarKatherine Waterstonhas landed the key role of Daniels, who will be joined byPrometheusstarMichael Fassbenderas the android David. We also know thatAlien: Covenantwill be the first in a newtrilogythat will eventually connect toRidley Scott’s original sci-fi classicAlien.Colliderrecently spoke with costume designer Janty Yates, who worked with the director onPrometheusand his latest sci-fi thrillerThe Martian, and she revealed thatAlien: Covenanttakes place 10 years after the events ofPrometheus, while teasing new details about the costumes.
“[Alien: Covenantis] not so much of a spacesuit movie. There are two different spacesuits in it, but it’s not a great spacesuit movie. We are only carrying on one look fromPrometheus, which is with David, the robot. He’s just got the hangover of thePrometheus1 spacesuit. It’s 10 years in the future beyondPrometheus.”
She also added thatRidley Scotthas signed off on the two different spacesuits, but she wouldn’t offer any details about how different they are from the suits seen inPrometheus. After rumors spread that originalPrometheusstarNoomi Rapacewouldn’t have a role inAlien: Covenant, it was later revealed that she only has a small role in the follow-up. Since the movie is set 10 years afterPrometheus, it isn’t known if we’ll see her in flashbacks, or if her character Elizabeth Shaw, the only human survivor ofPrometheus, died in the decade that followed.
The story centers on the crew of the colony ship Covenant, who are bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy. They discover what they think is an uncharted paradise, but it actually turns out to be a dark, dangerous world. And the sole inhabitant is the “synthetic” David (Michael Fassbender), survivor of the doomedPrometheus expedition. Aside fromKatherine Waterston, no other new casting additions have been announced at this time.

It has also been confirmed by the director thatAlien: Covenantwill feature some sort of connection toSigourney Weaver’s iconic Ellen Ripley character from the originalAlien. Some have speculated that we may even see Ripley conceived on the Covenant ship, and thatKatherine Waterston’s character may actually be Ripley’s mother.
