Edgar Wright’s latest has just lined up its lead actress. Anya Taylor-Joy is set to headline Wright’s upcoming horror/thrillerLast Night in Soho. We only recently learned that theBaby Driverdirector has been putting this project together quietly in the background and it sounds very much like this is going to be a departure from the filmmaker’s usual comedic exploits. While not much has been revealed about the movie so far, lining up a major star on the rise to topline the cast is a great place to start.
According to a new report,Anya Taylor-Joyis set to play one of the leads inLast Night in Soho. There is no indication currently as to who will be starring alongside her. Taylor-Joy has been on the rise in recent years and is asserting herself as a modern day scream queen. Her breakout role was in director Robert Eggers’The Witchand that led to her scoring a role in M. Night Shyamalan’sSplit. Most recently, the actress was featured in that movie’s sequel,Glass, which has been tearing it up at the box office. Taylor-Joy is also set to star inThe New Mutants, a horror-themedX-Menspin-off that, unfortunately, has been plagued with delays.
Last Night in Soho, beyond this new casting information, remains largely mysterious. It’s beendescribed as a psychological horror/thriller, with Edgar Wright previously usingDon’t Look Nowand Roman Polanski’sRepulsionas touchstones. All that has really been revealed is that the movie will take place in central London. Wright penned the screenplay alongside Krysty Wilson-Cairns, who is known for her work onPenny Dreadful.
Edgar Wrightis coming off of the success of 2017’sBaby Driver, which grossed $226 million worldwide and was met with a great deal of praise from the critical community, on its way to a couple of Oscar nominations as well. Wright had previously been known for his Cornetto Trilogy movies,Shaun of the Dead,Hot FuzzandThe World’s End, which all star Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. ButBaby Driverhelped put him in another category in the eyes of Hollywood and there were even rumors that he was possibly up for the job of directingJames Bond 25, before the producers settled on Cary Fukunaga.
But Edgar Wright’s next movie remained a question mark up until very recently. He’s still working on a sequel toBaby Driver, which has a draft of a screenplay, and he’s also finishing up a documentary on the band Sparks.Last Night in Sohois expected to shoot this summer, which means we should be learning much more about casting in the near future. Focus and Working Title have not yet set a release date for the project, but 2020 seems very realistic. We’ll be sure to keep you posted as more details are made available.
