You’ve seenRiverdale. You loved it. Now get ready forArchie in Bollywood. The world ofArchie Comicsis making its way to the big screen, but not in the way you may think. It’s been announced thatArchie Comicshas teamed with Graphic India in order to produce a Bollywood-style movie based on the characters that fans know and love. This is the first international comic to ever be translated for Indian screens, which makes it pretty significant. Especially considering that there’s never been a live-actionArchiemovie made for American audiences.
This BollywoodArchiemovie is in the very early stages and no release date has been set. It will be taking the characters from the world ofArchie Comics, Archie, Betty, Veronica, Reggie, Moose and Jughead, and reimagining them for Indian audiences. The movie will utilize an Indian cast, but will incorporate elements of the comic book series. There have been quite a few different runs inArchie Comicsover the years, but we’re assuming they don’t intend to include elements from some of the darker stories likeAfterlife With ArchieorArcher vs. Predator, even if a Bollywood-styleArchie vs. Predatormovie sounds pretty amazing. Here’s what Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater had to say about the movie in a statement.
“We are supremely excited to partner with the great team at Graphic India to bring Archie and his friends toBollywood. Archie’s lasting and growing presence in India made this move the logical next step as our stellar library of characters continues to expand into other media. It’s a major moment for Archie and its fans around the world.”
The world ofArchie Comicshas been around since the early 40s, but the company has seen a huge surge in popularity as of late. Much of that is thanks toThe CW’s Riverdale, which has aired two seasons so far. The series is a darker take on the source material and has done incredibly well for the network. It was also recently announced that the company has partnered with Netflix for a newSabrinaTV series. This new movie will only help further fuel the ascension ofArchiein mainstream pop culture. Sharad Devarajan, co-founder and CEO of Graphic India, had this to say about the upcomingArchiemovie.
“Archie, Betty, Veronica and Jughead have been a source of inspiration for numerous Bollywood films over the years, and now it’s time to take them fully into Bollywood in an excitingnew twistof a story that we have planned. These characters have held a special place in the hearts of Indians for decades and we have no doubt that the new Indian cast of Archie and the gang will be an exciting moment for the country.”
Since its inception,Archie Comicshave sold more than 2 billion copies worldwide and have been published in 17 different languages, with the book distributed in countries all around the world. Currently, there’s no word on casting or who’s set to direct this BollywoodArchiemovie, but it’s still in the early stages. This news comes to us courtesy ofVariety.
