For going on two decades now,Hugh Jackmanhas been one of the most beloved actors to ever bring a superhero to life in the form of Wolverine in theX-Menfranchise. However, all good things must come to an end and that end is nearly upon us as production has started onWolverine 3, which will beJackman’s last go around as Logan. Though we don’t know a ton about the film yet, we may finally know who the bad guys will be in the upcomingX-Menspinoff.
A new report from Nerdist claims to have confirmation from “a source close to the production” as to who the villains will be. It looks like Wolverine will once again be fighting big, bad robots in the form of Reavers. In the comics at least, Reavers were a group of criminal cyborgs who were bent on destroying the mutant X-Men, and they have a particular disliking for Wolverine specifically. Fans finally got to see Sentinels brought to life inJackman’s last turn as the character inX-Men: Days of Future Pastand though it will once again be robots, the Reavers are quite different from what we’ve seen and seem to fit into what we know about the film.
Though we don’t know exactly whoNarcosstarBoyd Holbrookis playing inWolverine 3, we know he has been cast as a “relentless, calculating… intense head of security for a global enterprise” who the Nerdist report claims will be an original creation for the film and not a character from the comics. But if the Reavers are actually going to be the main nemesis for Logan in the film, it would make sense to have someone pulling the strings behind the scenes. Beyond that, we know that the film is going to berated R, James Mangold is back in the director’s chair,Patrick Stewartis returning to playProfessor X, it will take place in the future and it will at least very loosely be based on theOld Man Loganstoryline. There has also been a presistant rumor thatX-23will show up, but that hasn’t been confirmed.
The originalOld Man Loganstoryline was written by Mark Millar and came out in 2008. It set Wolverine 50 years in thefuturein a time where the United States has been totally conquered and divided up amongst various Marvel Comics super villains, and heroes are mostly a thing of the past, save for Wolverine and a few others. The book features a ton of characters very prominently that are owned by Marvel Studios and as of right now Fox and Kevin Feige don’t appear to be getting along all that well, so the story will have to be a pretty decent departure from what actually takes place in the comics. Sorry folks, Wolverine won’t be hanging out with Hulk and Hawkeye yet.
Jackmanhas been playing Wolverine ever since Bryan Singer’s firstX-Menmovie in 2000 and is the only Mutant prior toDeadpoolthat has been able to successfully carry a film outside of the team films. Though the first attempt,X-Men Origins: Wolverinewas a critical bomb and fans pretty much universally hate it, the second attempt with Mangold at the helm,The Wolverine, was much better off. The film made more than $400 million worldwide and was quite will liked by both fans and critics. The mutants will next be seen inX-Men: Apocalypse, which opens this weekend andWolverine 3is set for a July 16, 2025 release.
