The Big Bang Theoryhas been so popular, and so lucrative for its cast, they haven’t ever really had to seek employment outside of this geeky small screen universe. But leading manJim Parsons, who playsDr. Sheldon Cooper, is about to make the rare leap to feature films. He has taken on the title role inMan-Witch. Don’t worry, it’s not about a dude mysteriously transformed into a Sloppy Joe. Though, that might sit okay withThe Big Bang Theory’s core fan base.
Man-Witch, deftly curbing from Warner Bros.' ownHarry Potterfranchise, tells the story of a schoolteacher, to be played by Jim Parsons, who discovers he has witch-like powers. He’s taken in by a coven of real-life witches, and is quickly sent through ‘witch school’. There, he is the only adult witch, surrounded by little girl ‘witches-in-training’.
Jim Parsons will also produceMan-Witch, which has been kicking around Hollywood for awhile. The movie is now set up at Warner Bros. Jim Parsons is developing the project himself, and will work behind the camera alongside co-producer Neal Moritz.
Warner Bros. first picked up the project way back in 2005 as a pitch. They reportedly paid $750,000 against $1.5 million for it at the time.Todd Phillipshad originally planned to direct, but a little movie calledThe Hangovergot in the way. That comedy became a smash hit, requiring the director to return for two sequels. He eventually lost interest inMan-Witch.
The fantasy comedy hadJack Blackset to star. He eventually dropped out and was replaced byZach Galifianakis. The comedian later joinedTodd PhillipsforThe Hangover, and the project was left to linger at the studio without any talent directly attached behind or in front of the camera.
Jim Parsons did make a rare appearance in thehorrormovie Visions, which is coming out later this year and starsAnson Mount,Isla Fisher,Gillian JacobsandEva Longoria. But he mostly uses his free time away from the set ofThe Big Bang Theoryto participate in other endeavors outside of acting. He did voice the lead character in the animated comedyHome, which hit theaters last spring. He also appeared in the dramatic comedyWish I Was Here, which was released in 2014. And he had a very memorable cameo in the 2011Muppetsmovie. No other casting has been announced.
