WhenMarvelconfirmed itsPhase Threeslate in October, producerKevin Feigerevealed thatChadwick Bosemanis portrayingBlack Panther, and he will make his debut inCaptain America: Civil War, which is currently shooting in Atlanta. Very little is known about howBlack Pantherfits into this massive story, which pits Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) against each other. But today we get new details fromKevin Feige, who is promotingAnt-Man. When asked if we will seeChadwick Boseman’s T’challa asBlack Pantherright away inCaptain America: Civil War, the producer had this to say.

“I don’t know how to answer that question without spoiling it! It is a role that he is still in the beginning phases of taking on, it’s a mantle he is only beginning to take on because his father is older.”

In the comics,Black Pantheris a title that gets handed down through the generations, withT’challa’s father T’chaka currently reigning, butBirth.Movies.Deathspeculates that T’chaka could either retire and pass theBlack Panthertitle along, or die, at some point duringCaptain America: Civil War. When asked whyBlack Panthergets introduced in this movie,Kevin Feigehad this to say.

“The reason we introduced him in Civil War is because we needed a third party. We needed fresh eyes who wasn’t embedded with the Avengers and who has a very different point of view than either Tony or Steve. We said, ‘We need somebody likeBlack Panther… why don’t we just useBlack Panther?’ That’s how it went in the development process.”

The producer adds that the MCU takes place in “real time,” withCaptain America: Civil Warset after bothAvengers: Age of UltronandAnt-Man. Both T’challa and T’chaka realize that they can’t stay hidden in Wakanda anymore.

“Today, pre-Civil War, post-Ultron I think he and his father are saying, ‘A bunch of vibranium just got out of here and wreaked a lot of havoc. Maybe we can’t stay behind these borders anymore, maybe we have to stick our heads out and make at least an attempt to be a part of the rest of the world right now, while at the same time protecting our people.’ That’s sort of where we meet him in Civil War.”
