Last October,Marvelofficially unveiled theirPhase Threeslate, revealing thatChadwick Bosemanwill playBlack Panther, who will be introduced inCaptain America: Civil Warbefore his own stand alone movie. We got our first look at theBlack Panthercostume at that massive press event, but we haven’t seen much more of this mysterious character since then. Today,Entertainment Weeklyhas a new photo ofBlack Panther, along with new details about this iconic character from the Captain America: Civil War cast.
Back in August, new promo art debuted forCaptain America: Civil War, which revealed thatBlack Pantheris on Iron Man’s side, along with War Machine (Don Cheadle),Black Widow(Scarlett Johansson) and Vision (Paul Bettany). Team Cap includes Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), The Falcon (Anthony Mackie), Sharon Carter/Agent 13 (Emily VanCamp) andAnt-Man(Paul Rudd). The promo art didn’t reveal which side Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) andSpider-Man(Tom Holland) will be fighting for, but, according to executive producer Nate Moore, it seems that T’challa hasn’t fully made up his mind about which side he’s on.

“He’s someone who hasn’t necessarily made up his mind about either side and whose agenda isn’t exactly what Cap’s agenda or what Tony’s agenda is. And I think that brings him into conflict weirdly with both characters at different times in the film. He is the prince of an African nation that has so far stayed very much sort of in the shadows. And eventually the film will draw him and his father out of the shadows.”
In theMarvel Comics,Black Pantherhails from Wakanda, which is where vibranium comes from, the same metal used to create Captain America’s shield. This summer’sAvengers: Age of Ultronalso featured a key character with ties to Wakanda,Andy Serkis' Ulysses Klaue, although it isn’t known if he will surface in Captain America: Civil War yet. While thefirst trailerforCaptain America: Civil Wargave us a brief look atBlack Pantherin action, very little is known about how he ties into the story. Here’s whatChadwick Bosemanhad to say about T’challa’s presence inCaptain America: Civil War.
“He’s definitely not the life of the party in this instance. I think this is something true of the comic book character and the movie. You never quite know where he stands. There’s always a bit of concealing and mystery. So I think mysterious is more his boat. Not to say there’s not charm and he can’t be a ladies' man and all that. It’s more like if there is humor, it’s more like James Bond. There definitely is a sort of tradition that he’s torn between, in terms of how things were done in the past and how things need to happen now in this new world. I think there’s perhaps a bit of a maverick there, and then there’s also a need to live up to traditions and his father’s legacy. And not even his father’s legacy, but the entire nation of Wakanda. I think those are the things you will see.”
Back in June, producer and Marvel Studios presidentKevin Feigeteased that T’challa is beginning to “take over” theBlack Panthermantle from his father T’chaka. T’challa’s father has been rumored to either die or pass on the throne to his son inCaptain America: Civil War. In his interview with EW,Kevin Feigeteases that T’challa has a “full arc” inCaptain America: Civil War, not just a cameo.
“We kept talking about ‘Somebody likeBlack Panther…’ After the third or fourth time that came up in a development meeting, someone said, ‘Can’t we just do theBlack Panther?’ And we all looked at each other and said, ‘Yeah, I guess we could.’ We introduce him here, give him an arc, and make him a full character. We don’t just give him a cameo, to wave. He has his own conflict and his own people that he’s looking out for.”
DirectorsAnthony RussoandJoe Russoalso revealed thatBlack Panther’s suit is actually made from vibranium, which could mean that his suit is virtually indestructible, much like Captain America’s shield.
