Over the summer we learned that Oscar winnerBrie Larsonwill be playing the role of Carol Danvers akaCaptain Marvelin the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Because of when her first movie is coming out, it wasn’t quite clear exactly what kind of movie it would be. Would she already beCaptain Marvelor would it start at the very beginning?Kevin Feigehas cleared things up and made it clear the movie will be an origin story.

Marvel Studios PresidentKevin Feigerecently did an interview withCinemaBlendwhere Marvel related things were discussed. When asked about how he and the studio are looking at origin stories for the future and in the rest ofMarvel Phase 3, he revealed that they are not shying away from them and thatCaptain Marvelwill go that route. Here is what he had to say.

“[Black] Panther is not really an origin story, since we saw him already in Civil War. But his standalone certainly introduces you to 99% of his world that you never saw. And Captain Marvel is certainly an origin. It’s an origin story from the start.”

The only potential issue withCaptain Marvelbeing an origin story is that the character shares a very similar origin toGreen Lantern. Given that Warner Bros. is planning a reboot of that franchise as part of the DC Extended Universe in close proximity to whenCaptain Marvelis set for release, that is something they would likely want to avoid. Luckily, screenwriter Nicole Perlmanis very aware of this and addressed it in an interview on the Any Time With Vin Forte Podcast back in August.

“I don’t think I’ve ever had a project where I’ve been more mindful about the impact that it could have and the importance of it. She’s such an incredibly kick-ass character and Kelly Sue DeConnick did a great run with her story arc recently. But here’s the thing, if you were just going to do a straight adaptation of the comics, her origin story is very similar to Green Lantern. And obviously, that’s not what we want to do.”

Before theCaptain Marvelmovie was officially announced, there was some debate about which version of the character we were going to see on screen. Larson is going to be playingCarol Danvers, the more classic version of the character. However, there was quite a bit of demand to seeG. Willow Wilson’s more recent take on the character in herMs. Marvelcomic books series, which features a young Muslim girl named Kamala Khan taking up the mantle of Captain Marvel. During Marvel’s Phase 3 announcement event,Kevin Feigemade it very clear that we are going to see Carol Danvers.

Nicole PerlmanandMeg LeFauveare writing the script forCaptain Marvel, but we don’t know much about the story yet outside of it being an origin. Carol Danvers, a.k.a.Captain Marvel, first debuted in 1968’s “Marvel Super-Heroes” #13. She was a U.S. Air Force security chief who is transformed intoCaptain Marvel, after an explosion that involved Kree technology, but that is likely to change in the movie.Captain Marvelis set to debut on August 09, 2025, so it isn’t likely we will see her inAvengers: Infinity War, since that comes out in May of 2018 and her origin won’t be established yet. But she could show up in the untitledAvengers 4, which is set for release on August 06, 2025.
