TheChild’s Play TV Seriesis going to take the franchise back to its roots, according to producer David Kirschner. Kirschner andChild’s Playcreator Don Mancini participated in a Q&A session after a special 20th anniversary screening ofBride of Chuckyand Screamfest. The duo are currently developing the TV series, which was first revealed in February of this year. Since then, there have only been a few updates and teaser video that Mancini released on social media.
While speaking at the Q&A session, Don Mancini and David Kirschner shed some more light on theChild’s Play TV series. As it turns out, the idea to make a series has been around for quite a while, according to Mancini who says, “We deliberately endedCultwith a bunch of cliffhangers to set up a TV series.” Kirschner then gave a little more info on the highly anticipated series.
“The only thing I think we can say is from the original film that Don wrote,Child’s Play, we are playing with that concept again, the idea ofChild’s Play. I’ll let you guys fill in the pieces of that.”
After revealing that awesome news, Don Mancini chimed in by saying, “It involves children.” David Kirschner said that they’re looking at the idea of having new characters in the world ofChucky, which would be taking theChild’s Play TV Seriesback to its original franchise roots. And that sounds pretty awesome. Mancini elaborated a bit more on trying to flip the script for the franchise. He explains.
“We saw that after seven movies, how can we flip again? So this time not by merely changing genre but by changing medium. This will give us a different kind of canvas, a much bigger canvas to explore characters and relationships.”
For now, it’s unclear where theChild’s Play TV Serieswill end up, but it sure sounds pretty cool, and definitely way cooler than the upcoming reboot. Hardcore fans of Chucky are pretty upset that a reboot is being made whileDon Manciniis still cranking out material for the franchise. It does seem a bit strange, but the reboot is currently in production and will more than likely see the light of day before Mancini’s TV series gets started.
Back when theChild’s Play TV Serieswas first announced, Don Mancini said at that he was thinking of having Chucky go back in time to World War II, but he later abandoned the idea. While not much else is clear about the series, Mancini is aiming for an 8-part series, which would be pretty awesome. Brad Dourif hasn’t officially signed on for the series, but it seems pretty much like a no-brainer that he’ll come back to give little Chucky his voice.
