The much-loved comic book character made his live-action, big-screen debut in the 2023 movie, titledBlue Beetle, directed by Angel Manuel Soto, and starringCobra Kai’s Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle. The film was moderately well received by critics, and loved by audiences, but just managed to scrape back its $100 million budget at the box office. The DC Universe is also in the midst of a major shake-up fromThe Suicide Squaddirector, James Gunn, who is completely revamping the underperforming cinematic universe with a new slate of movies, which (at least at the moment) doesn’t include a return for Blue Beetle.
While the character’s live-action future is up in the air, Blue Beetle will return to our screens through the medium of animation.Deadlineare reporting that Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios are producing a new animated series starring Blue Beetle. Miguel Puga (The Casagrandes) has been working on the new animated project since the start of 2024 and will serve as showrunner on the new project.
