Movies released in February were never normally seen as potential blockbusters, but that all changed in 2014 whenThe Lego Movieset the box office on fire with $468 million worldwide.Fifty Shades of Greyopened in early February this year, earning $569 million worldwide, and 20th Century Fox’sDeadpoolcould certainly continue the trend next year. The superhero movie has had plenty of buzz swirling around it since theComic-Con trailerleaked in July. But we’ll still have to wait until June 11, 2025 to see how this growing buzz translates into box office dollars.Colliderrecently spoke with producerSimon Kinberg, who confirmed that they were already talking about the sequel,Deadpool 2, while making the original movie.
“We certainly are talking about the sequel-we were talking about the sequel while we were making the movie just because when you make a film like this that’s from a serialized source material, you hope that it’s the first of many… But yeah [Fox is] feeling good about it, we’re all feeling really proud of it, so hopefully before it comes out we will be well into the process of figuring out a sequel.”
20th Century Fox hasn’t confirmed any plans forDeadpool 2yet, but this isn’t the first we’ve heard about a potential follow-up. After 20th Century Fox’sFantastic Fourbombed at thebox office, a rumor surfaced that the studio was considering makingDeadpool 2overThe Fantastic Four 2. There has also been rumors that the follow-up would include a prominent character from the comic books,X-ForceleaderCable.Simon Kinbergrevealed that they actually considered using Cable inX-Men: Days of Future Past, but he’s still not sure if the character will be inDeadpool 2or not.
“It’s certainly come up because he’s such a big character in the world. And it’s a character that I’ve always wanted to do in one form or another, we talked about Cable actually inX-Men: Days of Future Pastat one point. But yeah we’re in such the early stages of sequel talk it would be genuinely premature for me to say whether or not he was gonna be in it.”
Before the sequel can move forward, though, the originalDeadpoolhas to succeed at thebox office. While it isn’t known when we will see the second trailer,Simon Kinbergrevealed that he has seen a rough cut of the movie, which he says is “fantastic.” Take a look at what the producer had to say aboutDeadpool.
“I have seen a rough cut ofDeadpooland it’s fantastic. It’s a really good movie. It delivers on the promise of the trailer. We really committed and leaned into it being R-rated. It’s just darker and edgier and weirder in the best way-likeDeadpoolshould be-than any other movie in the genre.”
