Some people take improv classes to be better public speakers, others love the community and the unpredictable nature of the performance. InDeep CoverstarringBryce Dallas Howard,Orlando Bloom, and Nick Mohammed, the comedy format is deployed to infiltrate London’s criminal underworld. The film released first-look images last year, but Amazon has just released a trailer for the comedy, which is coming toPrime Videoon June 1st.
The film will adhere to the comedy rule of threes, teaming up a trio for the criminal mayhem. Bryce Dallas Howard plays Kat, an improv teacher who fears she may have missed her shot at fame. Orlando Bloom’s character is an intense method actor who uses improv as a tool to hone his craft and stay immersed in a role, while Nick Mohammed is the window character and the audience’s surrogate into the world of improv as a down-on-his-luck everyman who wants to find his confidence. The three are brought together by an undercover cop (Sean Bean) to use their quick-thinking to vamp their way into the fold of criminal organizations.

The Best Action Comedies Netflix Currently Has to Offer
A good action comedy sandwiches humor in between high-speed car chases and bare-knuckle brawls, dishing out jokes as often as explosions.
The film is directed by Tom Kinglsey, who cut his teeth directing several BAFTA-winning TV comedies for the BBC, likeGhostsandStath Lets Flats. Kingsley spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the stars of the film and their characters:

“[Bloom’s character] really commits and he is improvising out of control, which is quite scary to his friends. Orlando was really smart about why the character was funny and how he could play it by basically committing completely to the role. He’s really up for making fun of himself…Nick has always been a star. He manages to make the smallest, simplest things hilarious, and you see a lot of great improvisation from him in this movie.”
The New Era of Action Comedy
Since around the late 2010s, the straight-forward comedy feature film has been a dying breed. The previous decade saw a proliferation of blockbuster comedies that made the likes of Jonah Hill, Seth Rogan, and Danny McBride houeshold names. We still seem to be in the grip of the jokeless comedy era as many of the films that make up “best of comedy” lists for the last five years aregood, albeit rather stark, dramadies. With movies likeDeep Cover, our way back to all-caps comedy will likely be through genre mashups in the vein ofHot Fuzzor theupcomingNaked Gunreboot with Liam Neeson.
The script forDeep Covercomes from writing team Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly, who have worked together on theJurassic Worldseries of films. The two have also teamed up with Ben Ashenden and Alexander Owen of the comedy double act called The Pin to create the script. In addition to Howard, Bloom, and Mohammed, the film has a stacked cast including Ian McShane, Paddy Considine, and Sonoya Mizuno.
