Denis Villeneuve’s 10 Best Movies, According to Rotten Tomatoes

From Prisoners to Dune, Blade Runner 2049, and Arrival, Denis Villeneuve has consistently delivered some of the best films of the 21st century.

Arrivalwas critically acclaimed upon release, and it proved Villeneuve’s abilityto design highly emotional experiences in a genre that’s often associated with thinly written plots. While the film throws aliens into the mix, it carries a universal message about what it means to be human when facing adversity. Villeneuve’s feature was praised by critics, and it sits at 94% on the Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes (his highest-rated film to date). The audience score, a.k.a. the Popcornmeter, registers a lower (but still hugely impressive) score of 88%. Its performance at the box office was equally good, grossing over $203 million from a $47 million production budget. Fans will be able to bask in the science fiction wonders ofArrivalwhen it lands onTubifrom tomorrow.

Amy Adams Should Have Won an Oscar for ‘Arrival’

When the nominations for the 2017 Academy Awards were announced,Arrivalwas one of the big favorites. It received eight nominations in total, and while it was mentioned in the Best Director and Best Picture ballots, it failed to win in the major categories. That night, Villeneuve’s sci-fi masterpiece went home with a single Oscar for Best Sound Editing.

However, the one snub that hurtthe most was Amy Adams being completely ignored for her performance. Her role inArrivalis significantly better than everything she’s ever done. The actresses that ended up in the Best Actress in a Leading Role race had awesome performances, but to this day, Adams' performance inArrivalstands out much more than any of them. Yes, even more than Emma Stone’s Oscar-winning performance inLa La Land.Adams is yet to win her first Academy Award. She has been nominated a total of six times, but none of them have been convincing enough to make the Academy recognize her as one of the best performers in today’s film industry.
