Last month, we reported that Sony and Marvel’s front runner to play the newSpider-Man is Asa Butterfield, who was one of the two top contenders rumored to be up for the coveted role, along withTom Holland. Today we have a new report that the studios have officially decided onAsa Butterfieldas the newSpider-Man, with the actor currently in negotiations with the studio. This hasn’t been confirmed by Sony or Marvel yet, but it seems the search for the new Peter Parker may now be over. Or is it?
When Marvel and Sony first struck a deal to bring Spidey into the Marvel Cinematic Universe earlier this year, part of the arrangement is that the newSpider-Manwill first debut in an upcoming Marvel movie, most likelyCaptain America: Civil War, which is currently in production. While it has never been confirmed that this is the movie he will appear in, it makes the most sense, since Spidey appears in the Civil War comics. Production is already under way in Atlanta onCaptain America: Civil War, althoughSpider-Man’s scenes won’t be shot until June.
The Hollywood Reporter’sBorys Kithas a conflicting report that no offer has been made toAsa Butterfieldyet, but both Marvel and Sony do like him. The actor is reportedly coming in to test for studio executives this week, and it’s possible that the dealAsa Butterfieldmay be negotiating is a testing deal. Of course, nothing has been confirmed, so it looks like the casting race is still ongoing for the new Peter Parker.
The stand aloneSpider-Manmovie doesn’t have a screenwriter or director in place yet, and very little is known about the story. There have been rumors that the newSpider-Manwill be the first of three or four new movies, each of which will cover one year of Peter Parker’s time in high school.Asa Butterfieldmost recently starred inEnder’s Gameand he is currently shootingMiss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.
