The first trailer for theDownton Abbeymovie teases the reunion that fans have been waiting for. Plans for the big screen adaptation were first announced in July of this year with production starting the following month. An idea for a movie had been talked about as far back as 2016, which was right when the massively popular TV series ended. Production wrapped in November, and we now have our first, albeit, brief look at the movie.
Themain TV cast returns for the movie, including Dame Maggie Smith, Hugh Bonneville, Laura Carmichael, Michelle Dockery, Penelope Wilton, Matthew Goode, and Elizabeth McGovern. In addition to the returning original cast, Imelda Staunton, Geraldine James, David Haig, Tuppence Middleton, Simon Jones, Kate Phillips, and Stephen Campbell Moore will star in the highly anticipated drama. The project is directed by Michael Engler from a script that Julian Fellowes wrote. Brian Percival was attached to direct at the beginning, but he later stepped down. Percival has remained on board as an executive producer for theDownton Abbeymovie.
In a recent interview, Penelope Wilton talked a little bit about what fans can expect from theDownton Abbeymovie. The actress is back as Isobel Crawley and she hopes fans will like it when it hits theaters. Obviously, Wilton couldn’t talk a lot about the project, but she did share a little bit of information. She had this to say.
“Hopefully people will enjoy the film… It has some very good set pieces in it and, when I say that, there are big scenes with a lot of people involved. It’s been very nice (to reunite with the cast), and it’s been much shorter, so instead of seven months it was nine weeks; and it was very nice to see everyone again.”
The television seriesDownton Abbeyfollowed thelives of the Crawley familyand the servants who worked for them at the turn of the 20th century in anEdwardian English country house. During the course of 6 seasons, the series garnered 3 Golden Globe Awards, 15 Primetime Emmy Awards, and 69 Emmy nominations in total, makingDownton Abbeythe most nominated non-US television show in the history of the Emmys. The hit series even went on to earn a Special BAFTA award and a Guinness World Record for the highest critically rated TV show along the way.
TheDownton Abbeymovie willhit theaters on September 20th, 2019, four years after the show ended. The movie will open up a week earlier internationally. There’s not much information as far as the plot is concerned, but a synopsis is expected to be released in the coming months, which should give fans a tease of what to expect.
