With 24 nominations, A24 crushed this year’sFilm Independent Spirit Awards. The filmEverything Everywhere All at Once, directed by Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, leads with eight nominations. After launching at SWSW last March, it became A24’s biggest-grossing movie, with $70M domestic and $103M worldwide.
InEverything Everywhere All at Once,Michelle Yeoh(Crouching Tiger,Hidden Dragon,Crazy Rich Asians) takes on the role of Chinese-American laundromat ownerEvelyn Wangwho is entangled in a series of multiverse events. Before attending a Chinese New Year party, Evelyn must meet with intimidating IRS auditor Deirdre Beaubeirdra (Jamie Lee Curtis). Her life is turned upside down when she discovers that the multiverse she never knew existed is under threat, and she alone can save it. As Evelyn switches between timelines, she is forced to deal with the alternative lives she could have lived if she had chosen differently.
She’s introduced to the multiverse by her underappreciated and quirky husband, Waymond Wang (played byKu Huy Quan.) Along with trying to master her skills and save the world, she’s got a lot of other stuff to deal with. Not only doesEvelyn’shusband want a divorce, but also her controlling father (James Hong) is visiting, and her daughter (Stephanie Hsu) is trying to get her to accept her girlfriend.

Aside from serving as the premier awards gala for independent film and television, the Film Independent Spirit Awards also serve as the organization’s annual fundraising event. In addition to promoting independent films, the event supports storytellers and independent filmmakers creating original works.
A few of the major nominations forEverything Everywhere All at Onceinclude best director and best screenplay. The awards also use gender-neutral acting categories for the first time, nominating Michelle Yeoh for best lead performance.
The film Tár is also nominated for best director, and screenplay, andCate Blanchettis nominated for best performance in the film. In addition to her nomination,Nina Hossis also up for the best-supporting actor award.
Aftersunby Charlotte Wells is nominated in five categories, including best first feature and best lead for Paul Mescal. Also nominated is Frankie Corio for the best breakthrough performance award.
TV shows are also recognized at the Spirit Awards, but nominees are not announced until December 13. A week before the Oscars on August 23, 2025, the ceremony will be held on the beach in Santa Monica.
