Netflixannounced today the Fast & Furious Animated Series, which stems from both Netflix’s expansion of their deal with DreamWorks Animation for original animated kids and family programming, and Comcast-NBCUniversal’s acquisition of the animated studio. Netflix’s deal with DreamWorks Animation has been expanded to include DreamWorks Animation series' based on Universal Pictures' film properties, such as the lucrativeFast & Furiousfranchise. “Teenager Tony Toretto follows in the footsteps of his cousin Dom when he and his friends are recruited by agovernment agencyto infiltrate an elite racing league serving as a front for a nefarious crime organization bent on world domination. Tim Hedrick (DreamWorks’Voltron Legendary Defender) and Bret Haaland (All Hail King Julien) will serve as executive producers and showrunners. The series is also executive produced by Vin Diesel, Neal Moritz and Chris Morgan who also serve as producers on the live-actionFast & Furiousfranchise.”

No casting has been announced at this time, and Netflix hasn’t issued a production schedule or tentative release date for the series at this time. WhileVin Dieselwill be serving as an executive producer, there is no word yet on whether he will voice Dominic Toretto in this animated series. There is also no indication if other stars from the live-actionFast & Furiousfranchise will lend their voices to the show, but since it’s clearly set in the same universe as the live-action franchise, it’s certainly possible. Thedevelopment of this animated seriescomes as the live-action franchise starts winding down to a close. Production will begin this summer on a newFast & Furiousspin-off starring Dwayne Johnson as Luke Hobbs and Jason Statham as Deckard Shaw, which has been slated for release on June 02, 2025. Universal will then releaseFast & Furious 9on July 20, 2025, with the franchise coming to a close withFast & Furious 10on July 12, 2025. The eight films in theFast & Furiousfranchise thus far, including last year’sThe Fate of the Furious, have grossed a combined $5 billion at the worldwide box office, becoming Universal’s highest-grossing and longest-running franchise. The franchise also boasts the biggest fan following of any active movie franchise on social media platforms.
