The undead aren’t going anywhere for a while, as AMC has ordered a seventh season ofFear the Walking Dead. News of the renewal comes straight from the show’s official Twitter account, which tweeted a video teasing the return of theWalking Deadspinoff. In the video, multiple references to the number seven are shown, from Texas road signs to a burning wooden seven in a campfire. “The past is dead… but the future is bright. #FearTWD is coming back for a 7th season,” the post reads.
A spinoff of AMC’s flagship seriesThe Walking Dead,Fear the Walking Deadis halfway through its sixth season with its midseason finale premiering last month. The series stars Lennie James reprising his role fromThe Walking Deadas Morgan Jones, as part of an ensemble cast that also includes Alycia Debnam-Carey, Colman Domingo, Danay Garcia, Garret Dillahunt, Maggie Grace, Jenna Elfman, Alexa Nisenson, Ruben Blades, Karen David, and Austin Amelio.
Word ofFear the Walking Deadgetting renewed follows a prior announcement from the network that the show’s parent series will soon be coming to an end.The Walking Deadis slated to conclude with asupersized eleventh and final seasonin 2022, bringing an end to the hit zombie drama that’s been a mainstay on AMC since its premiere in 2010. Its cancelation has also led to concern fromFear the Walking Deadfans that the spinoff could be ending its run as well, but now they can take some comfort in knowing the show will be getting at least another season.
It’s also known that the end ofThe Walking Deaddoes not signal the end of the franchise on AMC. Along withFear the Walking DeadandThe Walking Dead: World Beyond, multiple other spinoffs set in the same universe are also in the works. One new show will bring back Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride asDaryl Dixon and Carol Peletier, following the two fan favorite characters as their adventures in the zombie apocalypse continues beyond the original series.
Meanwhile, ananthology series called Tales of the Walking Deadis also in the works. Each episode will present a different story and follow different characters, opening the door for all kinds of creative possibilities to further expand the franchise’s universe. Some stories will be set in the past, and it’s likely some characters who’ve been killed onThe Walking Deadwill return for one-off prequel episodes. Animated episodes and even a musical episode have been teased as possibilities for the series.
Andrew Lincoln is also set to reprise his role as Rick Grimes in aWalking Deadmovie following the actor’s exit from the show partway through its ninth season. While progress on the project is not moving very quickly,The Walking DeadChief Content Officer Scott Gimple has promised that the movie will be “amazing.” The limited spinoff seriesThe World Beyondwill also lead directly into the Rick Grimes movie.
