The Rise of Skywalkerfeatures the iconic opening crawl sequence like the rest of the movies in the franchise. However, this one proves to be a bit more confusing than we’ve seen in the past. A portion of the crawl reads: “The dead speak! The galaxy has heard a mysterious broadcast, a threat of REVENGE in the sinister voice of the late EMPEROR PALPATINE.” This isn’t a spoiler since we knew Palpatine was returning, but what we didn’t know was that the popular video gameFortnitewas about to become officialStar Warscanon. While we see inThe Rise of Skywalkerthat Emperor Palpatine has broadcast his return to the galaxy, we never hear it in the movie. Actually, when it comes to Palpatine, we’re not really told a whole lot about anything, but that’s a story for another time… Come to find out, gamers who took part in the special Fortnite screening of aStar Wars 9clip last weekend were treated to the missing broadcast from ol' Palpatine.

That’s right,Fortnite is now official Star Wars canonthanks to last weekend’s event. After the clip played, players watched an animated J.J. Abrams jump into the Millennium Falcon and take off while some TIE Fighters lingered. Right after everybody is gone, we can hear Emperor Palpatine broadcast his return. “At last the work of generations is complete,” the villain says. “The great error is corrected. The day of victory is at hand. The day of revenge. The day of the Sith!”

This broadcast was essentially what kicked offThe Rise of Skywalkerand found the Resistance spooked. While this missing dialogue would have been a nice addition to the movie, it wasn’t essential, especially considering all of things that are left out, likehow Emperor Palpatine returnsin the first place. We all thought, along with George Lucas, that he was space dust after getting tossed into the Death Star’s reactor before it blew to pieces over the moons of Endor. Whatever the case may be, he’s back, or he was back. Another one on the list of the manyconfusing things about The Rise of Skywalker.

The Rise of Skywalkerand Fortnite event got off to a rocky start and wasn’t the smoothest event, butStar Warsfans were still treated to a clip from early on in the movie. Now, the final installment in the Skywalker Saga is in theaters for all to see and take in and the reviews have been mixed, which is putting it lightly. J.J. Abrams made some controversial decisions to move the story along, while neglecting different aspects that were introduced in the movie. Regardless, Fortnite holds the key to at least one of the many mysteries surrounding the threequel.
