A very scary moment happened behind the scenes during the production of the 2007 movieP.S. I Love You, as starGerard Butlerhas revealed. In the romantic drama, directed by Richard LaGravenese,Hilary Swankstars as a married woman whose life is forever changed upon the death of her husband, played by Butler. After his death, she starts to receive letters he’d written before his passing, helping to help guide her navigate through the loss and move on to the next chapter of her life.

But it was almost Swank who came close to actually losing her life while on the set of that film, according to Butler. ThePlanestar recently appeared onThe Drew Barrymore Show(perVariety) and reflected on his time working on that film. He shared the story of how he was filming one particular scene where he’s dancing while wearing suspenders, and it was then when he inadvertently sliced his co-star’s head open. As the actor explains:

ps i love you 2

“I shot that scene for a day and a half, and I had to dance like an idiot in the suspenders. At one point, the clip, which was a crocodile clip, got stuck in the television as I’m crawling towards her, and she’s right in front of me, laughing hysterically. The camera people had these plastic fronts to protect themselves from this crocodile because I had to ping it, and it would go [flying] past my face. I’m crawling towards the bed, it gets stuck, it releases, flies over my head, hits her in the head, slashes her head.”

With blood drawn, Swank was hospitalized, leaving Butler to weep alone in his underwear back on the set, riddled with guilt.

“I mean, I cut her open. You could even see the teeth of the [crocodile]. She had to get taken to the hospital. I’m just sitting there in my boxer shorts and my boots and a pair of socks, and I just started crying.”

Hilary Swank Apparently Brushed It Off

Clearly both professional and tough, Swank quickly recovered from the accident and soon returned to the set to finish filming. Perhaps we shouldn’t expect anything less from someone who’s starred in her ownKarate Kidmovie as well as the ultra-violent horror-comedy filmThe Hunt. It worked out in the end, as the film was a box office success, scoring more than $156 million with a budget of $30 million. Swank also garnered the People’s Choice Irish Film and TV Award for Best International Actress with her role in the film.

P.S. I Love Youwas co-written by Steven Rogers and director Richard LaGravenese. It is based on the book of the same name by Cecelia Ahern. Along with Butler and Swank, it stars Lisa Kudrow, Harry Connick Jr., Gina Gershon, Kathy Bates, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
