Fans of the iconic team don’t have much longer to wait.The Ghostbusters Ultimate Collectionis coming, and Sony has released a special features trailer giving more info on what will be available for fans! The trailer can be seen below.
If you’re already familiar with theGhostbustersfranchise, you won’t need an explanation. If you aren’t familiar, well, it’s right there in the title! The supernatural comedy premiered in 1984, directed by Ivan Reitman and was written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. The film followed Aykroyd, Ramis, Bill Murray, and Ernie Hudson as they come together and start their business of professional ghost busting.
The film was groundbreaking for its time, mixing a primarily comedic script with big budget special effects. There were worries that a movie that expensive would break even on its $25-30 million dollar budget. But for seven weeks, it hung onto the number one slot! The film has gone on to earn almost $300 million at the box office. The success of the film naturally spawned a sequel in 1989, two cartoon shows in the ’80s and ’90s, several comics,video gamesand more! There were plans for a third movie, but for several reasons (one of them being the tragic death of Harold Ramis in 2014) it was shelved. Instead, there was a reboot,Ghostbusters: Answer the Call, set in an alternate universe in 2016, but sadly the film had a divisive reaction from fans. But soon, another movie would release thatwould bring everyone back together inGhostbusters: Afterlife.

Ghostbusting is Back in Full Force
Ghostbusters nostalgia is back and better than ever, with fans young and old coming together for paranormal mayhem. To celebrate,Sony is releasing an 8 disc set for the most hardcore collectors.The set will have the first two movies as well asAfterlife. The special features trailer boasts an impressive 20+ hours of rare and never before seen extras such as behind-the-scenes footage, a rare preview cut, newly resurrected deleted scenes, audition footage, commentaries and more!
In addition to the footage, the set comes with an exclusive reprint of the original 220-page bookMaking Ghostbusters. The set will be packaged in a box made to look like a ghost trap. Sadly, a physical disc of the 2016 reboot is absent from this release, with only a digital code included. The decision has sparked a bit of controversy since it was initially announced as part of the collection, but has since been dropped. Director Paul Feig even went to social media tovoice his upset feelings on the matter.As of now Sony has yet to release a response, but the popular theory is that the decision to drop the third movie was to appeal to fans that weren’t impressed. Depending on whether you liked or disliked the film, this can be seen as a positive or negative to the release.
Regardless of the exclusion, if you consider yourself a hardcore fan of the 80’s staple, this is definitely something to consider throwing some cash at. If not for the 4K upscale of the classics, then the never-before-released goodies and collectibles. This was absolutely made for the hardcore fans in mind, and already they’re bubbling with anticipation. TheGhostbusters Ultimate Collectionis currently available for pre-order and will be released officially on February 1st, 2022!
