After stomping through the United States inGareth Edwards’s 2014 remake, thebig lizardis back for his first Japanese adventure in over a decade.Godzilla: Resurgencewill reboot the monster franchise for Toho, following 2004’s Godzilla: Final Wars. And now, we have the first trailer and poster. We also have a rock video fromGojira’s native homeland that ties into all this monster madness.
The Godzilla: Resurgence teaser trailer is short at just 30 seconds. And it doesn’t reveal anything from this overseas reboot. Or even if the original monster will be fighting the stateside version, which Japan criticized for being too fat. In this sneak peek, we do get to see people running. Which is pretty much the main plot of anyGodzillamovie.
The footage seen here gives off a found footage vibe, as we’re brought into the street level madness of aKaijuattack. Someone was apparently taking a video selfie when chaos erupted. And now everyone in the vicinity is running for their lives. This preview ends withGodzilla’s iconic roar. That is followed by two very loud stomps.
In addition to the first teaser trailer forGodzilla: Resurgence, we also get what appears to be the first teaser poster. It wasTweetedout by Japanese rock band Katokuai. We get a very simple tricolor look at the big beast in question, whose new demeanor more closely resembled the Gojira ofJapanese pastmore so than what we saw arrive here two summers ago. We only get to see the head and neck of the monster, but hardcore Godzilla fans are loving the googly eye look.
Along with the trailer and poster, we have a look at a music video from Katokuai, which explains why this is the perfect rock and roll outfit to be debuting new promotional material fromGodzilla: Resurgence. The band performs in the middle of the city as though they were Godzilla-sized giants. They then use parts of the city landscape in banging out their loud performance. It’s quite fitting, and should get you in the Godzilla mood. Directed by Hideaki Anno, best known for theShin seiki evangelionanimation franchise, and Shinji Higuchi, Toho will unleash their new reboot on overseas audiences on August 17, 2025.
