Comedy sequels are a difficult thing to execute correctly. In the history of cinema there are very few that have managed to live up to their predecessor.Goon 2, the sequel to the 2011 cult comedy, will attempt to do that next year. Now,director Jay Baruchelhas unleashed the first trailer forGoon: Last of the Enforcers, which gives a promising look at what could be one of those few comedy sequels.
The trailer forGoon 2showed up on YouTube and five years after the original, shows the return ofSeann William Scottas Doug “The Thug” Glatt. It really is a teaser in the true sense of the word, since the trailer clocks in at barely a minute long and gives very little in terms of plot for the movie. Even without that, the trailer is probably exactly what everyone who liked the originalGoonwould want to see, because there is a lot of cursing, fights and low brow humor, in the best sense.

In case you didn’t see the originalGoon, or if you need a refresher, Doug, played bySeann William ScottofAmerican Piefame, is a mostly sweet-natured, simple guy. Not exactly the “hockey” type. But, he does have a talent for beating people up, which is a big thing in the world of hockey. A local hockey team takes notice of his unique skill and Doug is recruited to be their new enforcer, which pretty much means he just skates around and takes care of business by beating up people on the ice. He eventually crosses paths with the league’s biggest goon (hence the name), Ross “The Boss” Rhea, played byLiev Schreiber, who is also returning forGoon: Last of the Enforcers.
Goonhad modest success at the box office, bringing in $7 million overall, but the movie wasn’t very expensive to make and found a huge audience on streaming platforms later on. What was perhaps more important when it came to gettingGoon 2made was that the original was very well-liked by critics and audiences. The movie currently holds an 82 percent approval rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Outside of maybe the horror genre, comedy is maybe the toughest sell for critics, so that definitely counts for something.
Much of theoriginal castfrom the first movie is returning forGoon 2, including the previously mentionedSeann William Scottas well asLiev Schreiberas Ross Rhea. Also returning will beMarc-André Grondinas Xavier LaFlamme,Kim Coatesas Coach Ronnie Hortense,Alison Pillas Eva andJay Baruchelas Pat.T.J.
