Back in April, we reported thatGoosebumpsscreenwriterCarl Ellsworthhas signed on to write a reboot ofGremlins, which had been in development for several years.Chris Columbus, who wrote both the 1984 original classicGremlinsand its 1990 sequelGremlins 2: The New Batch, came on board to prodce, alongsideSteven Spielberg.Chris Columbusrevealed later that month that the project is not a remake, and that it will have a connection to the original classic. While no plot details have been revealed yet, originalGremlinsstarZach Galliganrevealed during a screening at London’s Prince Charles Cinema, thatChris Columbuswill never allow aGremlinsremake to happen, as long as he’s alive. And he hints that this next installment may be a true sequel set thirty years later.

“It’s not going to be a reboot. It will not be aremakein any way, shape, or form.Chris Columbushas come out and said that the first film is very near and dear to his heart and as long as he is alive it will never be remade.”

Zach Galligan starred in bothGremlinsandGremlins 2: The New Batchas Billy Peltzer. The original classic follows Billy, who receives a mogwai as a gift from his father (Hoyt Axton), and is given three simple rules to follow: Don’t get him wet, don’t expose him to bright light and don’t feed him after midnight. After these rules are broken, the mogwai spawnsGremlins, which terrorize Billy’s hometown. While it still isn’t known what connection there will be to the original movie and its sequel, Zach Galligan revealed that he still isn’t sure if he has a role in the newGremlins.

“I swear on my life, I don’t know if I’m in it or not, but I think there is probably a decent chance since I’m one of the few people left standing from the first movie.”

The newGremlinsdoesn’t have adirectororcast membersin place quite yet, andChris Columbushimself even hinted this summer that he is still involved in this project, but it isn’t clear how far ahead the producers are in the development process. It’s clear, though, as long asChris Columbusis involved, he will try to protect everything that fans loved about the original movies, and ensure the new project stays on track. Do you think Zach Galligan should return for this new version ofGremlins?
