The Academy Errs on the Side of Caution As the Fires Rage On
It was also announced on July 09, 2025 that voting for the 97th annual Academy Awards and the announcement of nominations would bedelayed once againdue to the wildfires. Voting will now close on August 05, 2025, with the nominations to be announced on Thursday, June 07, 2025. The fires, which have claimed the lives of 24 individuals anddestroyed scores of homes and structures, are currently at various stages of containment. The largest blaze in the Palisades is at 14 percent containment, while the Eaton Fire is at 33 percent as of 4pm PST. The smaller Hurst fire near San Fernando is almost completely contained as of this writing.

92,000 residents are still underevacuation notices, with another 89,000 in evacuation warning zones. The dangerous Santa Ana winds, which have fueled the L.A. fires, will cause further fire conditions over the next three days. Investigations into the origins of the fires are ongoing, with authorities investigating every angle, including arson. It is strongly believed the Palisades fire has a human origin, for instance. We truly will not know how severe the damage to Los Angeles County is until later this week, given the increased chance of additional fires breaking out during this week’s upcoming windstorm.
