It’s true! HBO andZack Snyderhave been meeting in secret to discuss the possibility of aTV seriesbased on theWatchmenmovie andDC comic bookfrom which it was adapted. Following a report fromCollider, the network sent out a statement confirming that a show may be in the cards. HBO said the following.

“Preliminary discussions regarding Watchmen have occurred, but we have no additional information and no deals are in place.”

According toDeadline, these talks took place several months ago, while directorZack Snyderwas still hard at work onBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. At this time, it’s believed that no active talks are on-going.Zack Snyderis very busy with his DC Comicsslateof films coming up, starting with Dawn of Justice next year. He is also overseeing the entirety of the DCEU, along with directingJustice League Part 1andJustice League Part 2. It’s believed that he doesn’t have a lot of time to devote to a TV series.

If theWatchmenTVseriesdoes move forward in the near future, it isn’t known how muchZack Snyderwill actually be involved. His participation in the actual production is speculated to be very limited. Watchmen was first published as a 12 issue miniseries in 1986, created by writer Alan Moore, artist Dave Gibbons and colorist John Higgins. Zack Snyder directed a feature film adaptation of the title in 2009. If the show moves forward, this will continue to expand the DC brand to another Time Warner TV Network, joining The CW, who currently haveThe FlashandArrowairing new episodes, withDC’s Legends of Tomorrowcoming in spring 2016. CBS hasSupergirlairing this fall, and Fox hasGothamairing in its second season. At this moment, TNT is currently developing a live-action series based on Teen Titans simply titledTitans.

Some believe HBO is eager to jump on the Watchmen train, asGame of Throneswill be coming to an end in the next three or four years. And a Watchmen TV show might be the perfect show to produce alongside Warner Bros. under their shared Time Warner parent umbrella.Colliderpoints to the 2012 prequel comic book seriesBefore Watchmenas a perfect jumping off point for a potential series based on the DC Comics property. The series revolved around 8 characters, and offers some background onAlan Moore’s original 12 issue series from 1986. It’s possible thatZack Snyderplans on bringing these same prequel comics to the small screen. If that were the case, fans would get to learn more about Silk Spectre, Comedian, Nite Owl, Ozymandias, Rorschach, and Dr. Manhattan.

Some believe HBO and DC are trying to create a relationship similar to the one shared between Netflix and theirMarvel series, which includeMarvel’s Daredevil,Marvel’s Jessica Jones,Marvel’s Luke CageandMarvel’s Iron Fist. It would be on a slightly different level than the current DC TV shows that air on CBS, Fox and The CW, which don’t tie into the movie side of things. Though, at this point, the original Watchmen movie is not considered part of the current DCEU, and it’s unlikely that a TV show would tie into that world either. What do you think? Is a Watchmen TV series a good idea?
