HBO Max Latin America is takingBatmanfrom Gotham City to Mexico withBatman Azteca: Choque de Imperios (Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires).Per Variety, news of the upcoming Spanish-language feature-length film was revealed Monday night at the 37th Guadalajara International Film Festival. The film is a collaboration between Warner Bros. Animation, DC, Anima and Chatrone.

The story takes place during the time of the Aztec Empire, where a young boy named Yohualli Coatl loses his father and village leader, Toltecatzin, after he is murdered by Spanish conquistadors.

Amsterdam

Yohualli makes his way to Tenochtitlan to warn King Moctezuma and his high priest, Yoka, of imminent danger. The synopsis reads: “Using the temple of Tzinacan, the bat god, as a lair, Yohualli trains with his mentor and assistant, Acatzin, developing equipment and weaponry to confront the Spaniard invasion, protect Moctezuma’s temple, and avenge his father’s death.”

Mexican actor and producer Horacio Garcia Rojas, known for his work onNarcos: MexicoandLa Reina Del Sur, voices Yohualli Coatl. Juan Meza-León, who directed the animatedHarley Quinnseries, serves as director. Anima’s José C. García de Letona and Fernando De Fuentes and Chatrone’s Aaron D. Berger and Carina Schulze serve as producers. Sam Register and Tomás Yankelevich serve as executive producers. To ensure proper and relevant representation of indigenous cultures, the creative team will work with Alejandro Díaz Barriga, a consultant specializing in Mesoamerican studies and the ethnic history of Mexico and the Andean region.

Batman Azteca: Choque de Imperioswill be produced entirely in Mexico and will feature local talent and highlight the region’s art and rich culture.

HBO Max Latin America and Mexico

After launching just last June,HBO Max Latin Americahas become the second-biggest streamer in Latin America (Netflix takes the number one spot).In an interview with Varietyearlier this year, Luis Duran, general manager of HBO Max Latin America, said:

HBO Max Latin America is currently streaming new series from Mexico, includingAmsterdam, about an artist couple living with their dog (Amsterdam) in Mexico City;Armas de Mujer, about four women whose husbands have been arrested for being part of the same criminal organization; andLas Bravas F.C., about the players of a Mexican women’s soccer team.
