While there are still no plans at Warner Bros. to bring backHenry Cavillas Superman in any future movies, the actor hasn’t gotten rid of the cape just yet. First debuting as the iconic superhero inMan of Steel, Cavill would go on to reprise the role in Snyder’s crossover moviesBatman v Superman: Dawn of JusticeandJustice League, along with the four-hourZack Snyder’s Justice Leaguereleased this year on HBO Max. He serves as a particular favorite for many Superman fans.
While the Snyder Cut was a big hit for HBO Max, leading to calls from fans for Warner Bros. to “Restore the SnyderVerse,” the company appears to instead be focused on fleshing out the ever-expanding DCEU. AMan of Steel 2could still happen with Cavill back as that incarnation of the character, and Cavill had said he was open to returning to that role. The possibility of it happening ultimately seemed to diminish when the news ofSuperman getting rebootedonce again was announced.
In a lengthy interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Henry Cavill touches on his time spent in the tights as the Man of Steel. He acknowledges the upcomingSupermanreboot, which will be written by Ta-Nehisi Coates and produced by J.J. Abrams, but he doesn’t see this as the end of the line forMan of Steel 2. He says how there are multiple versions of Batman in different movies from the studio, so Cavill suggests that they could surely do the same with Superman as well.
“It’s exciting - Superman’s far more than skin color. Superman is an ideal. Superman’s an extraordinary thing that lives within our hearts. Why not have multiple Supermen going on? Joaquin Phoenix did a wonderfulJokermovie; so what if it’s not tied to the rest of [the franchise]? They have multipleSupermancomic book storylines happening at the same time.”
Henry Cavill then makes it very clear he hopes to reprise the role of Clark Kent if only given the opportunity. That decision is obviously not up to him, but just in case, he’s still keeping the cape on standby. The actor details how there’s stilla lot of storytelling potentialfor his version of Superman if he’s lucky enough to move forward with the character.
“There is still a lot of storytelling for me to do as a Superman, and I would absolutely love the opportunity. The killing of Zod gave a reason for the character never to kill again. Superman falling to the ground and screaming afterward - I don’t think that was originally in the script, but I wanted to show the pain he had. I did far more emotional takes they didn’t choose; tears were happening. He just killed the last remaining member of his species. That’s the choice he made in that moment, and he’ll never do that again. There’s an opportunity for growth after that, to explore the psyche of Superman as a deep, seemingly invulnerable god-like being but with real feeling on the inside. As I always say, ‘The cape is still in the closet.'”
You never know what can happen in the future, and we just might see Cavill as Kal-El on the big screen again someday. For now, fans can look forward to seeing him return as Geralt on the hit Netflix seriesThe Witcher, which premieres itslong-awaited second seasonin December.
