The Old Guardpremiered on Netflix in the summer of 2020. Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and based on the comic book of the same name, the movie featured a strong cast withaction-legend Charlize Theronas the lead. The film debuted during the first wave of COVID—when theatrical releases were halted and streaming platforms became the primary services viewers turned to for content—and ultimately became ahuge success for Netflix. The Old Guardfollows a band of immortal beings as they go on dangerous missions across the globe with the aim of helping people. Andy (Theron) is the leader of this group, and we see the film through the eyes of U.S. soldier Nile Freeman (Kiki Lane) who has recently discovered that she is an immortal.
The Old Guardfound praise in itsgrittier take on the comic book adaptation formulaestablished by larger franchises like Marvel. On top of that, it made history as thefirst movie production to host a crew that was 85% women. With Prince-Bythewood’s direction, Theron’s performance, the overall inventiveness that the movie brought to the comic book landscape, it’s no wonder thatThe Old Guardproved to be a hit, so much so thatThe Old Guard 2was almost immediately greenlit. Here’s everything we know aboutThe Old Guard 2.

The Cast: Who Will Be Involved?
At the end ofThe Old Guard, no characters had died, so there’s no indication that any of the main cast will be missing from the next film. The main cast will likely include the same as the first film: Charlize Theron as Andy, KiKi Layne as the Nile, Matthias Schoenaerts as Booker, Marwan Kenzari as Joe, and Luca Marinelli as Nicky. The villain from the first series, Steve Merrick, was killed, so it’s unlikely that Harry Melling will return unless in flashback form. Additionally,Victoria Mahoney has been confirmedto direct the movie.
Booker will likely return this series after we saw him exiled from the band of immortals for betraying them and helping Steve Merrick. WhenThe Old Guardended, we also saw Quynh (Ngô Thanh Vân) show up at Booker’s apartment after the audience were led to believe that she was trapped in an iron maiden in the ocean. It’s likely that these two characters will cause some commotion.

Plot: What Will it be About?
Nothing has been officially confirmed in relation to the plot ofThe Old Guard 2, but judging from the first movie, there are several things that are very likely to happen. The most likely direction for the plot would be Quynh seeking revenge after being cast out and left at the bottom of the sea for hundreds of years. It’s also important to note that Andy is no longer immortal, so this vulnerability could be where Quynh places her target. We only see Quynh’s character for a moment at the end of the film, so there’s still a lot we do not know about her; however, after the torture she endured, it’s likely that she will be looking for revenge.
Even though Merrick was defeated at theend of the last film, Andy notes that it’s extremely difficult to stay hidden in the modern wild, and another tycoon like Merrick could have caught on to the presence of the immortals, wanting to us them for their own gain. It’s also unclear if Merrick had any contacts who knew about them or are also involved in trying to seek out the immortals. It’s clear the plenty more action is in store in the upcoming series.

Expected Release Date
It’s already been confirmed that shooting for the next movie would begin mid-2022, so it’s unlikely that the sequel would be ready to be streamed on Netflix at any point this year. The original film was released in July, so a summer 2023 release would seem likely since the film performed exceptionally well during the summer release period. With no official announcements form Netflix, this is all speculation, and we could receive news at any point which will give us a more concrete understanding of when the film may be released.
