The Sanderson Sisters will return to Disney+ this Halloween for more witchy mayhem inHocus Pocus 2, and with the belated sequel set to be a huge hit, there are always whispers of the franchise developing beyond the film.Hocus Pocus 2director Anne Fletcher has now addressed the possible return of the Sandersons for even more movies, saying the door is definitely open if the demand is there.
Hocus Pocuswas a surprise hit back in 1993, and while the movie has also gone on to gain a cult following, the biggest surprise of all is that it took almost three decades for a sequel to be made. However, that sequel arrives at a time when Hollywood, and audiences, are in love with fantasy and nostalgia and thanks to its returning castHocus Pocus 2delivers on both counts. WithBette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy all back for the sequel, along with Doug Jones reprising his role as Billy Butcherson, everything is set to deliver a spellbinding family romp this October. However, according to Fletcher, this may not be the last time the Sandersons take flight. She toldSFX Magazine:

“I have definitely kept it wide open for any sequel. Now it’s really up to them if they want to do it. I can’t say anything other than yes, it is left open. Will they do it? I don’t know, they haven’t even talked about it, that I can be honest with you.”

Hocus Pocus 2Will Follow a Similar Story to the Original Movie
Although director Fletcher has said in previous interviews thatHocus Pocus 2is “very different” from the 1993 classic, there is plenty to suggest that it will not stray too far from the plot of its predecessor. The synopsis reads: “It’s been 29 years since someone lit the Black Flame Candle and resurrected the 17th-century sisters who were executed for practicing witchcraft, and they are looking for revenge. Now it is up to three high-school students to figure out how to stop the ravenous witches from wreaking a new kind of havoc on Salem before midnight on All Hallow’s Eve.”
Of course, there will be new settings, the inclusion offlashbacks to the Sandersons as children, and other surprises, but in essence, the story remains the same. That raises the question of whether it would be possible for the story to be fleshed out in a new way or whether a further sequel would just re-tread the same path once again.
For now, fans ofHocus Pocusare just looking forward to seeing the franchise’s stars making a return in the sequel, and it seems from their interviews that Midler, Parker, and Najimy are all thrilled to be back as the Sanderson’s once again.Hocus Pocus 2will premiere onDisney+on September 30 as part of the streamer’s Halloween line-up of shows and movies heading to the platform this October. Whatever the future holds for the Sanderson’s beyond that is something that will only be revealed in time.
