Prime Video’sSomebody I Usedto Knowstarring Alison Brie and Jay Elis presents the prospective viewer with an interesting takeon a usual love triangle. The movie will premiere on the platform just a few days before Valentine’s Day on February 10. The movie is directed by Dave Franco, who is known for his roles in movies likeNow You See MeandNow You See Me 2. He also wrote the screenplay alongside Alison Brie, the protagonist of the story who also happens to be his wife.
Thetrailer has aroused immense interestnot because it seems to be a well-polished romantic comedy but because of what looks to be a true love triangle where all three characters seek each other. If Prime Video succeeds in its attempt to create thisnew form of romantic comedy, this might be a new era of romantic comedy altogether. A lot relies on how the movie ends, how well the script is written, and especially the audience’s perception of the entire story.

Rekindling Lost Love
The trailer opens with Ally (Alison Brie) sitting in a café, which seems to be located in her hometown. There she spots her ex Sean (Jay Ellis) from ten years ago and attempts to hide from his line of vision, presumably avoiding an awkward encounter. But as luck would have it, they meet, talk, and seem to spend some time together which arouses certain questions. Ally wonders if she made a mistake leaving her hometown and Sean years ago to go after her dreams and desires. Old feelings return to her, and she misses the freedom she hasn’t experienced in years. Then she meets Sean’s mother.

All talks and hugs, until Ally finds out Sean is engaged and willsoon be married. At this point, the trailer moves forward to show Sean’s fiancé, Cassidy, who is very cool. But instead of accepting that she lost Sean, she chooses to stay to see what her reuniting with him means. His engagement causes her to further rethink every choice she has ever made. She needs to see this through. While ensuring Cassidy is not uncomfortable with her presence, Cassidy throws another bomb Ally’s way considering her to be just Sean’s closest friend.
But now, instead of continuing on the route of the jealous ex, Ally is more and more mesmerized by Cassidy, and she reminds her of herself at that age. Ally’s attention is more and more encapsulated by Cassidy.

Ally’s Feelings Change Course
In a traditional form of any romantic comedy, a movie with this form of a plot will usually conclude with our female protagonist ending up with the male protagonist, who will eventually realize that he made a mistake in wanting to marry his current partner and breaking up with the protagonist was the worst decision of his life. But inSomebody I Used to Knowwhile most part of the trailer gives a fair idea of what the story will be and of a possible end, the concluding part of the trailer leads to confusion. While Ally realizes she needs a lot of her old self back, she also seems to not know for sure what she seeks romantically.
How Will Their Love Story End?
Instead of being able to predict who Ally will end up with, every prospective watch is just as confused as Ally, who seems to want to romantically seek both Sean and Cassidy. And both of them seem to want to do the same with Ally. Atrue love trianglewhere all three involved seek each other than two individuals seeking one.

This is new and a reason why it is attention seeking. Rather than rejecting the movie believing one knows the end, one would want to see for themselves exactly how this three-way confusion will end. Maybe she’ll end up with Sean. Or Cassidy. Or will simply leave them both to go on a journey of self-discovery. The ending will hold the most weight in the movie.
Alison Brie shared a video onInstagram, in collaboration with Prime Video, where Alison Brie and Dave Franco talked about how the entire experience was just nostalgic for them from when they first met. Then Franco proceeded to talk about an old recording he had of Brie saved on his phone as “Alison drunk.” He called it “a real recording of Alison eloquently expressing her love for me.” As the recording played, it was Brie speaking gibberish and to this background, the video showed a lot of pictures of the couple. The video shows how special this movie is to them and the nostalgia they felt while making it will also be felt by other couples and romantic comedy fans.
