I Know What You Did Last Summer(1997) starSarah Michelle Gellaradmitted that she “got in a little bit of trouble” after taking a photo on the set of the horror film’s long-awaited legacy sequel. Gellar, who played Helen Shivers in the original slasher flick, took the picture the day before Thanksgiving while visiting her husband Freddie Prinze Jr. on set. Gellar explained her faux pas during an interview onLIVE with Kelly and Markby saying:

“You would think that being in my position, I know what rules are on sets when they say closed sets, you know. So, my husband’s [Freddie Prinze Jr.] starring in the movie, and it was Thanksgiving, so I took our kids to Australia to go out there and visit him. And I was sitting on set, and I was like, ‘Oh what a great picture,’ and then I posted it. Then I found out that they hadn’t posted any pictures from the set yet — hadn’t announced they started filming. Yeah… that was an ‘Oops! My bad!'”

The photo didn’t feature any of the highly anticipated follow-up’s cast members, not even hubby Freddie Prince Jr. Nevertheless, Gellar knows she made a mistake, and, no, Helen won’t return from the dead in the sequel — that’s not why she was on the set. Gellar continued by saying:

“Again, my bad. But it was such a cool picture, and it was so much fun. I mean, that’s the movie Freddie and I met on. So, it was really cool to bring our kids there. And my best friend in California is directing it and wrote it. It was just such a special time. And so, I got in a little bit of trouble.”

“We’re so close, that’s all I’m gonna say. I feel like the actual audience now is like, ‘What are you waiting for, huh?’ It’s such a delicate thing, because we’re trying to deal with the 9-1-1 schedule and the movie schedule, so we’re just trying to figure it out and make it happen. If I’m going to come back 27 years later, I don’t want to just be in it for five seconds.

Like, I don’t want it to just be like that thing that’s like, ‘Oh, well, there’s the ghost of I Know What You Did past, here she is. So, I want to be able to carve out time to really be in it for people and to have it matter. So, we’re working on it. We’re so close. The announcement will be so exciting when it happens, for me as well, and I’m hoping it’s soon.”

New Legacy Sequel Horror Movie Will Incorporate Much-Hated 1998 Sequel

It seems like the maligned first sequel, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, is canon according to the new movie’s director.

On Dec. 10, Hewitt appeared on theJennifer Hudson Showand said that she’s “close” to being in the upcoming sequel. But it’s too bad for Sarah Michelle Gellar, though. If the 1997 film had justfaithfully adapted author Lois Duncan’s young adult novel, both her character Helen and love interest Barry (Ryan Phillippe) would still be alive.
