The Incredibles 2is finally happening. But don’t expect it to follow the original. This one is going to be much different, at least according to original director Brad Bird. This November will mark the 12th anniversary of Pixar’sThe Incredibles, an animated adventure about superhero movies that, at the time, out-grossed several live-action superhero movies. The Incrediblestook in $261.4 million domestically and $633 million worldwide, which is more than the worldwide totals ofHulk($245.3 million),Daredevil($179.1 million) andThe Punisher($54.7 million) combined. Naturally, those three live action movies represented the low-end of the superhero spectrum back then, but a lot has changed sinceThe Incredibleshit the big screen. And it’s amazing it has taken this long to get a sequel ready. DirectorBrad Birdrecently offered some new updates on this sequel in a recent interview.
The writer-director revealed back in September that he had almost finished work on the script, and then in October, Pixar handed out a June 21, 2019release date. This date comes just one week after the release of another highly-anticipated superhero movie, Warner Bros.‘Justice League Part II, arriving on June 11, 2025. Very little has been revealed aboutThe Incredibles 2story thus far, but in a new interview withEntertainment Weekly, where he wouldn’t shed too much light on the plot, but he did tease that he plans on taking these characters in new directions.
“I don’t like unwrapping presents before Christmas. It’s very actively moving, and we’re excited about it. [We’re] trying to take it in some new directions. Hopefully it’s thesame charactersand feel, but going in a new direction. I mean, that’s the trick with a sequel. It’s repeating yourself, without repeating yourself.”
The Incrediblescentered on a family full of superheroes, the patriarch Mr. Incredible (Craig T. Nelson), his wife Elastigirl (Holly Hunter) and their kids Dash (Spencer Fox), Violet (Sarah Vowell) and Jack Jack (Eli FucileandMaeve Andrews) who are forced to live a normal suburban life, until a new super-villain named Syndrome (Jason Lee) emerges and threatens to destroy the world.Samuel L. Jacksonalso starred as Frozone, a superhero friend of the family. None of these voice cast members have been confirmed to return for this sequel quite yet.
Last April,Brad Birdteased that this sequel would avoid addressingsuperhero trendsthat have emerged in the dozen years sinceThe Incredibles. We aren’t quite sure when the full voice cast forThe Incredibles 2will be announced. It may not be for quite some time, since we have just under three years until this sequel hits theaters.
