The popular sitcomIt’s Always Sunny in Philadelphiacould still just be getting started, as series creator Rob McElhenney says he and the cast intend to keep it going for as long as the fans are watching. While promoting his newest projectMythic Quest: Raven’s Banquetat the Winter Television Critics Association press tour, McElhenney made it clear that his work on the Apple TV+ series would not interfere with his work onIt’s Always Sunny. In fact, the cast and crew of the beloved comedy series have each dedicated a certain amount of time to their schedules each year just to keep the show going for as long as they possibly can.
“It takes us about five months to make a season ofSunny. We have that period of our lives carved. We’re going to keep doing it forever if people keep watching,“Rob McElhenney said of the FX sitcom’s future. The network is also firmly on their side, as FX Networks and Productions Chairman John Landgraf and FX Entertainment President Eric Schrier have both said they want to keepIt’s Always Sunnygoing with new episodes as well. After Schrier said he and Landgraf “hope” the show will continue with more seasons, Landgraf added, “We’re actively talking to them about more.”
McElhenney createdIt’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, developing the series for FX alongside Glenn Howerton. The two also star on the series with Charlie Day, with the three also serving as executive producers. Kaitlin Olson and Danny DeVito also star. The show primarily follows a group of friends who run theSouth Philadelphia Irish bar called Paddy’s Pub, with each of the unique characters bringing something interesting to the table. Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Jimmi Simpson, Lynne Marie Stewart, Nate Mooney, and David Hornsby have all added a lot to the series in their recurring roles as well.
First premiering on FX in 2005,It’s Always Sunnyhas now aired 154 episodes across 14 seasons. The show received its last series renewal in 2016 when it was picked up for two more seasons, with that deal coming to an end with the finale of season 14 in November. Reaching this 14-season milestone also ties the series withOzzie and Harrietas the longest-running live-action comedy. Reaching season 15 will officially set the new record, though the show’s future has been unclear with no renewal yet announced. Even with its current fourteen season run, the show has already accomplished far more than most other sitcoms of its type, so in any case, whatever happens from here on out is all just icing on the cake.
