The rebooted DCU is finally making its way to the big screen next month with the release ofSuperman. After two years of waiting, the Man of Steel (played by David Corenswet) is ready to take to the skies against Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult). The film is expected to dominate the box office, and DC Studios is so sure it will be a hit, it’s already begun work on a sequel… sort of.James Gunn, who wrote and directedSuperman, recently revealed thatSupermanwill, unsurprisingly, have a long future in the DCU, and the character’s second outing is already being developed.

James Gunn spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the upcoming DCU movie, and the director had a surprising amount to say about potential sequels in the future. Gunn confirmed that he has already begun working on Superman’s next DCU appearance, although he wouldn’t go so far as to call it a sequel. “What I’m working on is in some way… I mean, yes, yes, yes, yes,” was his response toSupermangetting a follow-up movie. “But is it a straight-upSupermansequel? I would not say necessarily.”

James Gunn Says Marvel’s ‘Guardians 2’ Post-Credits Scene Made His Life Hard - While Teasing ‘Superman’s Own Stinger

James Gunn has revealed the status of ‘Superman’s post-credits scene, while addressing how he is avoiding the problems caused by Marvel’s stingers.

While some might be disappointed by the update, as Gunn denied the new project being a “straight-upSupermansequel,” the director and co-president of DC Studios has previously made it clear that the studio is more focused on standalone projects than giant team-up movies and endless sequels. But Superman returning for more DCU projects shouldn’t come as any surprise, given how popular the character is. Previously, Warner Bros.’ president David Zaslav said that theDCU will revolve around Superman, Batman,Wonder Woman, and Supergirl. During the interview, Gunn confirmed that the statement is mostly true. “I wouldn’t say only those four characters, but I would say that those four characters are incredibly important to us,” was his response.

Superman’s Next DCU Appearance Has Already Been Confirmed

Fans might be waiting a while before James Gunn’s (not)Superman 2is officially announced by the studio, especially given the vast slate of movies and shows already in the works at DC. But we won’t be waiting long for David Corenswet’s Man of Steel to appear on the big screen again. The actor is confirmed to reprise the role, however briefly, in2026’sSupergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.

The movie will follow Kara Zor-El (Milly Alcock), Superman’s Kryptonian cousin, as she helps an alien girl avenge her father. Alcock will debut as Supergirl inSuperman, before flying off for her own standalone movie next year. As well as Alcock and Corenswet, the film will also star Jason Momoa as Lobo, the motorcycle-riding intergalactic mercenary.
