James Gunnwill be applying his creative vision to many more DC Studios projects after the newDC Universekicks off withCreature Commandos,Superman, andPeacemakerSeason 2. Gunn and Peter Safran are the new heads of DC Studios, and will be revamping the cinematic universe after a long string of cinematic duds. Gunn is already attached as writer and director on the three aforementioned DCU projects, buthe recently told fans he’ll be at the helm of several more DC projects moving forward.
As an unofficial ambassador forThreads(where he drops most of his DC bombshells, for some reason), James Gunn responded to a fan’s question about directing more DC movies in the future. Gunn is currently hard at work on the three previously listed projects, as well asoverseeing the rest of the DCU(which has had various updates over the past few weeks), and has far more on his plate than most directors. While he didn’t announce which projects he would be writing and/or directing, Gunn confirmed that more DC movies will be prefaced by “A James Gunn Film.” He wrote:

“Yes, after I’m further down the road with [Superman, Peacemaker, and Creature Commandos],there will be [other projects].”
It’s hard to predict which projects James Gunn could be taking creative control over in DC Studios' future. The ‘Gods & Monsters’ phase is already stacked with incredible and underappreciated characters for various creatives to put their own spin on. With DC Studios seemingly embracing unique stories, tones, and genres with each of their upcoming projects,James Gunn probably won’t put his name down to directtoomany other DC projects in the near future. What makes it more unpredictable is that Gunn and Safran have chosen some obscure characters to kick-start their opening DCU phase. Alongside the usual favorites like Batman and Superman, DCU’s starting line-up includes theCreature Commandos,The Authority, andBooster Gold.

James Gunn Loves Popularizing Underappreciated Superheroes
For younger audiences, it’s hard to imagine a world where the Guardians of the Galaxy (the best trilogy in the MCU) aren’t popular. But, before James Gunn brought them to life on screen, only the most die-hard of comic book fans had heard of the intergalactic team. The same goes for many of the characters in James Gunn’s first official movie under the DC banner:The Suicide Squad. As well as Harley Quinn, the team consisted of Peacemaker, King Shark, Bloodsport, Rat Catcher II, and Polka Dot Man. Many of these characters were treated as joke villains by DC fans, but Gunn made a point to give them serious representation in his movie.
A New Superhero Group Confirmed to Join James Gunn’s Ever-Expanding Universe
The writer of the upcoming Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow has been tasked with also writing a film about the young superhero group.
It is likely that James Gunn and Peter Safran will do the same in the DC Universe. As a result, we wouldn’t expect James Gunn to direct any of thealready announced DC projects.Instead, he will likely put his name to movies and shows that focus on lesser known characters —perhaps a Mister Miracle series? Or Human Target?(We’re giving you storytelling gold here, James Gunn!)
Creature Commandos, the first title in the new DC Universe, premieres on Max on December 5.
