In an exclusive interview withMovieWeb, the cast ofCivil Warhas discussed the topical dystopian war movie, with Kirsten Dunst revealing that her husband,Jesse Plemons, did not initially want to join the project…until she asked him to. Dunst and her co-star Wagner Moura reveal details of a particularly harrowing scene in the film, in which Plemons’ character stops the journalists and interrogates their American citizenship.

Wagner Moura:That scene was particularly difficult for me personally. “What kind of American are you?” That question was really a hard one for me. So, I’m an American citizen too, but I speak with an accent. I didn’t grow up in this country. I always thought, what would I do, if some day someone asked me something like that? What would be my reaction? And till today, I don’t know. Those two days with Jesse asking me that question over and over again. It was very difficult for me.

Civil War - Cailee Spaeny, Kirsten Dunst, and Wagner Moura Interview

Kirsten Dunst:It’s not a role that he wanted to play. I kind of asked him to play it for us because he’s such a brilliant actor. And I knew that that scene was such an important scene, because it ships the film into high gear after that scene.

The scene has been teased in trailers forCivil War, andPlemons once again brings his uncomfortably intense, intimidatingpresence to proceedings. Something that was clearly needed for what sounds like a pivotal moment in the movie.

Civil War has been met with critical acclaim, withMovieWeb’s own Julian Romancalling the movie a “cinematic gut punch.”

“Filmmaker Alex Garland’s near-future dystopian collapse of democratic ideals turns neighbors into brutal enemies with vicious realism. The premise of an authoritarian president’s refusal to leave office and allowing a peaceful transition of power is all too realistic given current affairs. The breakdown of social order that follows is a cinematic gut punch.”
