While all seasons ofGame of Throneshave been shrouded in some level of secrecy, HBO has become even more sneaky over the past two seasons, since the show has now caught up withGeorge R.R. Martin’s books. The series used to unveil all of their new cast members during the show’s annual Comic-Con panel, but that is no longer the case, although there have been casting reports that have shed light on the new cast members coming in. The first new actor that was reportedly joiningGame of ThronesSeason 7 wasJim Broadbent, and during a recent interview, the actor revealed the first details about his character. There will be potential SPOILERS below if you aren’t caught up with the series yet, so read on at your own risk.

Screen Crushrecently spoke withJim Broadbentfor his new movieThe Sense of an Ending, where he first spoke about the character. While he wouldn’t divulge the character’s identity, he did reveal his character’s profession, which may offer a big clue to his identity. Here’s what the actor had to say about hisGame of ThronesSeason 7 role.

“I’m a maester, an archmaester. I’m an old professor character. I did five episodes. I did sort of one major scene in each episode.”

The original casting report claimed he was playing a “significant” role," which certainly seems to be true, since he appears in five of the seven episodes inGame of Thrones Season 7. The actor also revealed that he shot all of his episodes in Belfast, and didn’t get to go out on location, while also adding that he shares scenes with Samwell Tarly (John Bradley). With all of these new details, ScreenCrush is now speculating thatJim Broadbentis playing Maester Marwyn, although the actor wouldn’t confirm if that was the character he’s playing or not.

When we last sawSamwell Tarly, he had finally made it to the Citadel in OldTown, where he passed a letter from Jon Snow (Kit Harington) informing the Citadel that Sam is to become a maester. He is then sent to the library to speak with the archmaester, who very well may be Maester Marwyn. It is believed thatGame of ThronesSeason 7 will pick up with Samwell and the archmaester’s meeting. It’s possible that these scenes could be taken fromGeorge R.R. Martin’s book A Feast For Crows, the fourth in the series, where Sam tells Marwyn the things he has seen beyond the wall. After learning about Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) and her dragons, Marwyn leaves to find her for reasons unknown, but it’s possible that connection between Marwyn and Daenerys could be explored in eitherGame of ThronesSeason 7, or the eighth and final season.

SinceJim Broadbentdidn’t shoot any of his scenes inGame of ThronesSeason 7 on location, it seems unlikely that he will meetDaenerys Targaryenthis season, with the show possibly saving that connection for the eighth and final season.Jim Broadbentalso revealed in his interview that he isn’t involved in any action scenes or sequences with CGI, so unless Daenerys makes her way to OldTown, it seems unlikely that she’ll meet Maester Marwyn this season, if that is in fact whoJim Broadbentis playing onGame of Thrones.
