Actress Julianne Moore and director Todd Haynes prepare to make this holiday season one fans won’t soon forget. Over the years, Moore and Haynes have collaborated on a number of thought-provoking projects, includingSafe, Far From HeavenandI’m Not There. But six years after their last big-screen teaming,Wonderstruck(2017), the duo returns in Netflix’sMay December. And Moore has her own thoughts on why their creative collabs work so well. Moore said in an exclusive interview with MovieWeb:

“He’s [Haynes] someone who talks about context and identity all the time. Like, ‘Who are we? Are we who we present? How do we present it, in what world do we present it in?’ You know, so all of those levels, I think, are all present throughout the film and throughout our lives, and it was exhilarating to be able to explore that.

I mean, I trust his intelligence. I trust his interest in particular subject matters. He writes a lot of his own things. And when he does select something to do that he hasn’t written, he’s really particular about it. There’s something that kind of rings a bell for him, and it’s always very human, really interesting, and provocative and compelling.”

Todd Haynes and Julianne Moore Working Together in May December

May December

DirectorTodd Haynesteams up with Julianne Moore once again in Netflix’sMay December. The melodrama centers around the character of Gracie (Moore) who is being shadowed by an actress named Elizabeth (Natalie Portman). Elizabeth is busy researching the real-life Gracie in order to portray her. Haynes and Moore have worked together numerous times over the years, since their first collaboration onSafe(1995). And the director likens their relationship to a “miracle.” Haynes said in the same interview with MovieWeb:

“It wasn’t until I met her and she read for me that I feel like I found this creative counterpart to what I was conceiving in that script, and to things that interested me, and challenging things that I didn’t think I’d seen in a lot of other films, that I wanted to try to explore in this one and that one. And I think she would say something similar in how she felt when she read the script, and how we met.

That’s just such a rarity, especially when you’re both interested in things that aren’t necessarily part of the commercial discourse and filmmaking. And we keep having the opportunity and the incredible blessing of being able to keep working together through the years and applying that partnership from role to role."

May Decembercurrently registers 93% on the Tomatometer, at the time of this writing, with a Rotten Tomatoes audience score of 94%. For more insights into the inner workings of Moore and Haynes’ latest collaboration, check outMovieWeb’sMay Decemberreview.
