Jurassic Worldwas not a reboot of theJurassic Parkfranchise, but it definitely did do a lot of course correcting and in a way does feel like its own franchise. So withJurassic World 2on the horizon, the question comes to mind; is it going to be a directJurassic Worldsequel or will it beJurassic Park 5, so to speak. The answer is both, according to directorJ.A. Bayona, who is getting ready toshoot in March.
Cinema Blendrecently got to interview the director, who is taking over forColin Trevorrow, who directed the firstJurassic World. They posed the question of what exactlyJurassic World 2is when it comes to the bigger picture of the franchise andJ.A. Bayonafeels as though it is a bit of aJurassic Worldsequel and a bit ofJurassic Park 5. Here is what he had to say.

“That’s a good question! I think somehow it’s both. It’s a very good question, and what we’re doing is a sequel to Jurassic World, but it’s definitely the fifth chapter of a longer saga. It’s very interesting. It’s always tricky, but you need to find a balance in what people expect to find, and the new stuff you’re bringing to the story. And I think the story is looking for a connection between Jurassic World and Jurassic Park – more than what Jurassic World did.”
Jurassic Worldhad the very difficult task of getting people back on board with the franchise after being dormant for 14 years. And the previous entry,Jurassic Park IIIwas not exactly what anyone would refer to as a high water mark, especially when compared to the originalJurassic Park. It is interesting thatJ.A. Bayonasays thatJurassic World 2will have more connective tissue with the originalJurassic ParkthenJurassic Worlddid. It has been teased that the sequel will not just bedinosaurs chasing peoplearound on an island, so we could be seeing more of a global impact of theJurassic Parkevents in the world now. That would certainly be different.

Colin Trevorrowdecided not to direct this time around, though he is still very much involved with the project. He is on as a producer and is co-writing the script, so he will have a big hand in shapingJurassic World 2. This will bedirector J.A. Bayona’s follow-up to his critically acclaimedA Monster Calls, which looks to be an awards season favorite this year. As for how the story will play out, it still remains a bit of a mystery, but we do know that bothChris PrattandBryce Dallas Howardwill be back to reprise their roles. The creative team behindJurassic World 2has also promised that the movie will be scarier, it will include new dinosaurs and it will include more practical dinosaurs.
Jurassic Worlddefinitely succeeded in getting people interested in the franchise again, as the movie made $1.67 billion worldwide. Now Universal has promised at least two more movies in the franchise, starting withJurassic World 2(orJurassic Park 5, if you will) which will start shooting in March of next year.Jurassic World 2is set for release on July 07, 2025.
