Jurassic World Rebirthis arriving in theaters laster this week, but critics are already handing out their verdicts for the latest entry in the long-standing dinosaur franchise. While it seemsRebirthis better than most of theJurassic Worldseries, it seemingly fails to live up to the film that started it all.
As of this writing,Jurassic World Rebirthhas a 57% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 69 reviews. The score is just shy of a Fresh rating, but it is among the best scores in theJurassicfranchise. It sits firmly in the second spot among theJurassic Worldfilms, ahead ofFallen Kingdom(47%) andDominion(29%), but short of the firstJurassic World(72%). MovieWeb’sown reviewofRebirthleaned toward the opinion that it is better than recent installments, while still failing to push the film series forward in a substantial way.

“From director Gareth Edwards (Rogue One, The Creator),Rebirthattempts to build on the most recent trilogy with dino innovations with a set of fresh faces — one of whom has taken home multiple acting Oscars. But even that, coupled with Koepp’s writing, can’t saveRebirthand its cringeworthy VFX from feeling like just another sequel to the Chris Pratt trilogy that began 10 years ago.”
First ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ Reactions Reveal If Life Has Found a Way (Again)
Prepare for some heart-pounding dinosaur action that pays homage to the original 1993 classic.
None of theJurassic Worldfilms, nor theJurassic Parksequels, have come close to Steven Spielberg’s original 1993 classic. Sitting at 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, the only sequel to get a fresh score on the review aggregate website is the firstJurassic World. Interestingly enough, when it comes to audience scores, the action franchise has not fared much better than with critics. The one exception is withJurassic World Dominion, which has a 71% on the Popcornmeter despite boasting the franchise’s worst critic score at 29%. WithRebirthseemingly leaning on the franchise’s roots, it seems nostalgia might be enough to get audiences back on board with the multi-billion-dollar film series.

‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ Is Leaning on Nostalgia Despite Its Title
DespiteJurassic World Rebirthwanting to rejuvenate the franchise with new ideas, it seems to be another sequel beholden to its extensive (and rocky) past. The film harkens back tothe action-horror vibes of the 1993 classic, but it doesn’t seem to reach much further than that. RogerEbert.com said thatRebirth"can be a lot of fun" whenever it is focused on people “in danger of being devoured by freakish, mutant dinosaurs.” However, the weak pacing works against that, stating, “it takes an awful lot of slogging through the jungle, literally and figuratively, to get there.” Vulture’s review acknowledged thatJurassicfans might continue to eat up new sequels, but it seems “the people tasked with making them sure are out of ideas.”
For some,Jurassic World Rebirthleaning on what has worked in the franchise may be exactly what they are looking for. The mixed reception thus far still points to a thrilling and visually stunning chapter in the film series. Associated Press believes thatRebirthwas able to recapture what made the originalJurassic Parka special cinematic experience.

“In many ways, the folks behind ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ are trying to do the same thing as their mercenaries: Going back to the source code to recapture the magic of Steven Spielberg’s 1993 blockbuster original. They’ve thrillingly succeeded.”
