WhileBatman v Superman: Dawn of Justicedoesn’t feature an appearance from Commissioner Gordon, the iconic DC Comics character will be making his DCEU introduction inJustice League. And it sounds like Warner Bros. has found the perfect actor to bring him back to life on the big screen. Oscar winnerJ.K. Simmonshas been cast asGotham City’s most trusted policeman, and he will be appearing alongsideHenry Cavill,Jason Momoa,Ben AffleckandGal Gadot.
Batman v Superman: Dawn of JusticedirectorZack Snyderis returning to direct Justice League Part 1. The movie will teamSuperman, Batman and Wonder Woman with a group of international superheroes that include Aquaman, The Flash and Cyborg. They will join together to fight a threat to the world that is bigger than all of them combined. It isn’t yet known how Commissioner Gordon will factor into the story, or if he plays a role in getting theJustice Leagueoff the ground as an actual team.

The movie will also starEzra Miller,Ray FisherandAmy Adams. Chris Terrior is responsible for the Justice League Part 1 screenplay, with the movie arriving in theaters November 2017.Justice League Part 2will follow in 2019, though it isn’t known if J.K. Simmons has signed on for both movies. The two films will not be shot back-to-back as previously reported.
Charles Roven, Zack Snyder and Deborah Snyder are producing Justice League Part 1.Zack Snyderand various members of his cast are already in London preparing for the upcoming shoot, which begins this April. J.K. Simmons is just one of many actors to take on the role of Commissioner James Gordon. The most recent of which isBen McKenzieonGotham, where the actor plays a much younger version of Gordon in his formative years. Lyle Talbot first played the character in the 1949 seriesBatman & Robin, with Neil Hamilton taking on the role in the 1966Batman.

On the big screen, Pat Hingle played Gordon inTim Burton’s 1989Batman, staying on throughJoel Schumacher’s 1997 disasterBatman & Robin.Gary Oldmanpicked up the mantel inChristopher Nolan’sThe Dark Knighttrilogy. This isn’t the first time J.K. Simmons has entered the world of superhero movies. He played J. Jonah Jameson inSam Raimi’sSpider-Mantrilogy. And there has often been talk about bringing him back to reprise the role for Marvel’sSpider-Manin 2017, which he’s stated in the past he is very open to.
