We are only a few weeks away fromThe Matrix Resurrectionsarriving in cinemas after a lengthy break for the franchise. As a direct sequel toThe Matrix Revolutions, which seemed to finish the film trilogy in 2003, there are some questions to be answered and it seems that star Keanu Reeves had some queries of his own when the movie was first pitched to him – like how he could return when his character was dead. The Matrixhas always been a baffling concept to many, but just how the new sequel is going to navigate a number of retuning characters is something thatLana Wachowskiseems to have in hand.

From preview, trailers and various other snippets of information to have been revealed about the fourth movie inThe Matrixfranchise, we know that along with the return of Keanu Reeves andCarrie-Anne Mossas Neo and Trinity, the film will also bring new versions of the likes of Morpheus and Agent Smith to the franchise, with the characters formerly played by Laurence Fishburn and Hugo Weaving now portrayed by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Jonathan Groff respectively. However, with the death of Neo inThe Matrix Revolutions, when the new installment was announced in 2019, it was met with a certain amount of puzzlement from fans, and it seems that Keanu Reeves was also a little perplexed by the revival.

the matrix

Speaking on his recent appearance onThe Graham Norton Showin the U.K., Reeves explained how he was first told about the plans to resurrectThe Matrixfranchise by text, and he immediately was interested to take part but unsure how it would all be possible. He told Norton:.

“I was at home, and I got a text from Lana Wachowski, the director and writer, and she was like, ‘What do you think about doing another Matrix film?’ And I went, ‘Oh, that sounds amazing, but I’m dead.’ And then she was like, ‘Are you?’ and I went ‘Do tell.” And she wrote a beautiful, beautiful script, a wonderful story, I think."

The Matrix Resurrections

While the trailers have revealed footage of Reeves’ character, seemingly without any memory of his previous time spent in The Matrix, how exactly he will be resurrected is something that so far has been kept under wraps. While fans have theorized every conceivable outcome and possibility, from Reeves’ comments it seems thatLana Wachowski has always had a plan of how Neo would return, and in asking the actor “Are you?” when he questioned the character’s current state, it looks like she has also hinted that it will be the same Neo and not some kind of copied replication from within the code of The Matrix.

The Matrix Resurrectionswill be arriving in theaters and on HBO Max at the end of the month, and without much to go on, it should have fans eagerly flocking to cinemas to discover what new secrets the Matrix has to reveal. Following in the wake of Marvel and Sony’sSpider-Man: No Way Home, The Matrix Resurrectionswill ensure a barnstorming finale to one of cinema’s most difficult years.
