Think about this: A new Oscar winner and a beloved formerSpider-Manstar are about to share the big screen together for a movie that sounds like a weird and intriguing fever dream. IfKirsten DunstandAnorabreakout starMikey Madisonfit the description perfectly, it’s because the two are set to star in a newAlejandro Landes Echavarríafeature calledReptiliathat involves a dental hygienist and…a mermaid. As odd as it sounds, it’s not too out of the ordinary for two women who have very diverse character resumes. Dunst was literally thelove interest of a guy who got bitby a spider and turned into a superhero, and Madison wasone ofScream 5’s Ghostfaces. So they feel like a perfect fit for this new project.
According toComicBookMovie.com, the movie “tells the story of a dental hygienist who is seduced by a mysterious mermaid into the dark and wet underworld of Florida’s exotic animal trade.” Alejandro Landes Echavarría, a film director, screenwriter, and producer — who wrote and co-produced the 2019war drama filmMonos —will direct from a script written by himself and Duke Merriman. Imperative Entertainment, Pastel, and AF Films will produce, as will Echavarría under his A Stela Cine banner. That’s the only information available right now, but the premise doesn’t sound bad at all. Obviously, it sounded good enough for Madison to want to be a part of followingher breakout Academy Award win.

‘Anora’s Mikey Madison “Pole Dances” Her Way Through ‘SNL’ Cold Open
Amid critic claims that she didn’t actually pole dance in the film, Madison clapped back with a jacked alter ego.
Winning a prestigious award like anOscar in your mid-twentiesis a massive accomplishment. Not only did Madison snag something that actors wait their entire lives for, but she did so with a film that’ll probably betalked about for generationsto come. The pressure that comes with the award can be a lot, however, as many actors are expected to continue that success. In an interview withGQ,AnoradirectorSean Bakersaid that Madison wants to do quality work and not be typecast into the same roles. “She wants to do quality work. She doesn’t want to do the same thing again and again. She doesn’t want to play another sex worker right away or another psychopath. She wants to mix it up.”

Kirsten Dunst is an Academy Award nominee with aresume full of varied roles. From starring inLittle Women(1994) toJumanji(1995), theSpider-Mantrilogy (2002-2007) and more, she knows the importance ofpicking roles that showhow versatile you can be rather than playing it safe. Dunst is the perfect person to star alongside Madison in this upcoming project.
Original Movie Premises Are Slowly Making a Return
Moviegoers are growing tiresome of remakes and heavily similar films. There is a lot of untouched potential in the industry because filmmakers seem to be recreating movies we’ve seen hundreds of times. Now, the original premises are making a comeback. This upcoming Landes Echavarría film is certainly new, just like Ryan Coogler’sSinners. Heck, even major IP blockbusters likeA Minecraft Movieand Marvel’sThunderbolts*are taking the sort of storytelling swings we wouldn’t have seen even five years ago. These kinds of movies are bringing people back to the movie theaters, as they’re all also currently overachieving at the box office, which is probably not a coincidence.
