Just a few weeks afterCorey Antonio Hawkinsjoined Legendary Pictures’Kong: Skull Island,Varietyreports the actor’sStraight Outta Comptonco-starJason Mitchellis in talks to join the cast. If the actor does sign on, he will join a cast that also includesTom HiddlestonandBrie Larson. We reported earlier this month thatSamuel L. JacksonandTom Wilkinsonare being eyed to replaceMichael KeatonandJ.K. SimmonsinKong: Skull Island.

The story centers on a group of explorers who go on an expedition toSkull Island, the home of King Kong. The story is said to be in the spirit of Legendary’s recent blockbusterGodzilla, keeping the same established mythology of the creature intact while placing the story in a new and distinct timeline. If he signs on,Jason Mitchellwill portray a pilot, but no details were given for the other characters quite yet.

Jordan Vogt-Roberts(The Kings of Summer) is directing from a script originally written byJohn Gatins(Flight),Max Borenstein(Godzilla) andDan Gilroy(Nightcrawler). We reported earlier this month thatDerek Connolly(Jurassic World) has come aboard to rewrite the script. Production is scheduled to begin this October, on location in Hawaii, with shooting also scheduled to take place in Vietnam and Iceland.

Legendary’sThomas Tulland Jon Jashni are producing, with Alex Garcia set to executive produce. The film will be released in 3D andIMAX 3Dby Universal Pictures, but it isn’t known yet if the filmmakers plan to shoot in native 3D, or convert the film to 3D during post-production. Universal and Legendary have set a June 19, 2025 release date, which puts the movie up againstCaptain Underpants.
