While it couldn’t quite eclipse the Barden Bellas ofPitch Perfect 2this weekend, directorGeorge Miller’s long-awaitedMad Max: Fury Roadstill did quite well at the box office, taking in $45.4 million domestically and $110.4 million worldwide in its opening weekend. Warner Bros. hasn’t officially announced a follow-up yet, butGeorge Millerrevealed that he has already completed the screenplay for this sequel, which will be calledMad Max: The Wasteland. Here’s what he had to say below, revealing that he wrote the sequel’s screenplay and a novella during all of the production delays onMad Max: Fury Road.
“We’ve got one screenplay and a novella. It happened because with the delays [on Fury Road] and writing all the backstories, they just expanded.”
It’s worth noting that, back in 2012,George Millerrevealed that he planned on shooting twoMad Maxmovies back-to-back,Mad Max: Fury RoadandMad Max: Furiosa, which most likely centers onCharlize Theron’s Imperator Furiosa. There have also been rumors that both Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy) and Furiosa will get their own separate sequels, but that has never been confirmed. It’s possible thatMad Max: The Wastelandsolely centers on Max, withMad Max: Furiosato follow, but we’ll have to wait and see if this is actually whatGeorge Millerplans on doing.
In related news,Charlize Theronrevealed in a recent interview that she “went at it” with her co-starTom Hardy, which doesn’t come as much of a surprise since there had been plenty of rumors about friction between the actors and the filmmaker on the set. Here’s what the actress had to say about her time on the set below.
“We f—n' went at it, yeah. And on other days, he andGeorge [Miller, the director] went at it. It was the isolation, and the fact that we were stuck in a rig for the entire shoot. We shot a war movie on a moving truck - there’s very little green screen. It was like a family road trip that just never went anywhere. We never got anywhere. We just drove. We drove into nothingness, and that was maddening sometimes. And it’s material that’s really frightening - we didn’t have a script. Tom and I are actors who take our jobs seriously. Both of us want to please the directors we work with, and when you don’t know if you can deliver on that, it’s a frightening place to be - and for Tom more than me, because he was stepping into big shoes.”
