Back in July, Netflix issued a renewal forMaking a Murderer Season 2, although the streaming service has still not revealed when the new season was debut. The show became a cultural sensation immediately after debuting in December 18, following the fascinating case ofSteven AveryandBrendan Dassey, who were convicted in connection to the murder ofTheresa Halbachin 2005. While there have been plenty of updates on the case itself, we still don’t know when the show will premiere, but today we have word from a Netflix executive that the show has been confirmed to air sometime this year.
USA Todaycaught up withCindy Holland,Netflix’s VP of original content, who confirmed that the show will debut at some point in 2017. However, she was still not ready to reveal an exact premiere date quite yet. Here’s what she had to say in a new interview below.
“The story is still ongoing, so you will seenew episodescoming sometime this year as this story continues to unfold. We don’t know when for sure new episodes will be coming.”
The story still is in fact ongoing, with a number of intriguing developments surfacing in the second half of last year. Back in August,Brendan Dassey, the nephew ofSteven Averywho was convicted alongside his uncle, had his conviction overturned by a federal judge in Milwaukee. The judge ordered that he shall be set free within 90 days of the overturned conviction, and in November, he was finally set free. There haven’t been many updates onSteven Avery’s case yet, and since the case is still evolving,Cindy Hollandrevealed that series creatorsLaura RicciardiandMoira Demosare still working on what the “right story” to tell this season is. Here’s whatCindy Hollandhad to say below.
“Laura and Moiraare (in Manitowoc) shooting regularly and working on what the right story is to tell in the next set, so we’re deferring to them on when it will be ready. Very few people inside of Netflix actually know the details of what we’re getting because we’re wanting to keep it really under wraps and it is an ongoing case so we’re trying to be sensitive to that.”
The federal judge who releasedBrendan Dasseyalso ordered that he is only allowed to travel in the court’s Eastern District of Wisconsin, while ordering that he must not obtain a passport, and that he cannot possess a gun, any other weapons, or controlled substances. The court also ordered thatBrendan Dasseymust not have any contact with the family of murder victimTeresa Halbach.Steven Averystill remains in prison for the murder of Teresa Halbach, but he toldDr. Philin an interview this past fall that he’s expecting to be released soon as well. Now that we know the new season ofMaking a Murdererwill be released this year, hopefully we’ll learn more about this new season soon.
