Even when he has an epiphany and hopes to make things right on Christmas after committing so many wrongs, Ebenezer Scrooge only makes things much worse. This is what happens in one of the new sketches that aired on Saturday night’s new episode ofSaturday Night Live, co-hosted by comedy legendsMartin Shortand Steve Martin. In the skit, Short plays Scrooge in a new ending toA Christmas Carolthat has the bitter old man trying to turn over a new leaf by offering a coin to an orphan, but that’s just the first part of what becomes a bloody, horrifying ordeal for the townspeople.

The trouble begins with the first coin Scrooge tosses landing straight into the eye of the young boy (Sarah Sherman). Then, hoping to pay for the medical treatment, Scrooge offers another coin from his window, but it lands directly into the child’s other eye. Things only get much more horrific as continued attempts to fix the situation only have more people getting badly hurt. The chain of events includes an icicle getting launched into someone’s chest and a horse kicking a man’s head off. Steve Martin also appears in the sketch as one of the ghosts, and he also fails to assist Scrooge, leading to some new advice.

“Okay, my earlier advice was to be nicer to people, but my new advice is to lawyer up,” Martin quips.

But Scrooge still hopes to take a valuable lesson from all of this. As he slams his window shut, he notes that the most important lesson of all is, “Merry Christmas!” Unfortunately, the slammed window breaks, sending glass shards down onto the people below as one final act of destruction. The clip closes out by revealing that it’s actually a parody ad for Apple Pay, which tells people to “never use coins again.”
